Looking for suggestions.

I have no idea how much they should cost - so far had 1 quote from the a jazz/swing band who play at the Reading Festival they say you can do 3 sets of 40 mins or 2 of 1 hr and the cost is £1200.

Id like to spend a lot less than that but am not sure.

Help.

Style of music love swing but also love 80's power ballads so even a small group in Berks would be great.

Not very swing or 80's power ballad orientated, but check out my profile to see if it's up your alley.

Decent function bands usually charge around £500 around here, they'll generally play a mix of classic and modern rock

That's pub/club money... £1200 is about right for a private function for a decent pro band..

Make sure you go to the band themselves and not via an agent's website as the fee will be knocked up. But yes expect to pay about a grand for 1h30mins set.

As has been said - £500 is Saturday night pub band money. £1000 is what you're looking at for a good quality professional function band.

My band goes out for anywhere up to £1500 depending on the venue. We've done 4 weddings in the last month and a half ranging from £800 (mates rates, and a local gig) up to £1200 for a gig 200 miles away at full rates.
