good call .......Glenn Hughes managed to yodel his way through his coke haze beleiving himself worthy, but quite frankly screeching.
It was his insistence on singing which finally drove Coverdale to quit (well, Tommy Bolin dying didn't help).

good call .......Definintly agree with you its either Gillan or Coverdale, are the voice of Purple!
as previously stated - Mike Patton has a fantastic voice. IMHO few great rock singers can cope with more than two styles (fast rock stuff, ballards). Mike Patton pulls off many different styles from the early Chuck Moseley wannabe stuff in FNM right through to Mr Bungle and Fantomas
I suspect his more avant guard stuff is a little way out for the 70's prog / rock guys on here but he certainly has an immmense talent
It would be interesting to know how old posters are when posting their preference -- I'm 32 - some of the 70's stuff I cna appreciate but most of it is far too chest beating for my liking

Judging on voice rather than popularity or recorded output he is up there with the best of 'em

Since the OP was about technical ability and not just "influence" or general "fits well with the music-ness", allow me to add into the mix...
Tarja Turunen
Annie Haslam
Good call. I'd add Sharon Den Adel from Within Temptation to that list and for the male side of things (expects a flaming) good'ol Meatloaf.Tarja Turunen

Any recommendation for which album would be the best as a first buy? As in, for Nightwish, get Century Child, then Once, then the others.
And I've been a fan of Mr. Loaf for many years, now.

Start with "The Silent Force" - it's more of a complete Album than "Mother Earth" (more a collection of songs up to that point than an album in itself IMHO) and less new Goth metal than "The heart of Everything"Jinx said:
