I was a little disappointed with KoL's 'Only By The Night' - some dcent tracks but a fair bit of filler imho. I prefer last year's 'Because Of The Times'.

Anyway, I digress.

Favourite album ths year is Stay Positive by The Hold Steady, with honourable mentions for The Stand Ins (Okkervil River), Dig Lazarus Dig (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds), Do You Like Rock Music? (British Sea Power) and The Seldom Seen Kid (Elbow).

If I were the sort of chap to downlaod music via torrent sites, I might have found Chinese Democracy a little messy and overblown.

Metallica - Death Magnetic

Honourable mentions to:

Airbourne - Runnin' Wild

Black Stone Cherry - Folklore & Superstition

Biggest disappointment (and maybe a bit controversial): AC/DC - Black Ice. Sorry, I really have persevered with it, but there really are only 2 or 3 decent, memorable tracks on it; most of it is pretty unremarkable. Maybe the biggest problem is that the Airbourne album simply blows Black Ice out of the water - out 'AC/DCing' AC/DC by some margin.

My favourite is Ashes Divide - Keep Telling Myself it's Alright. The solo album from the guitar tech for Tool and guitarist and singer of A Perfect Circle.

Others I really like:

Nine Inch Nails - Ghosts
Coldplay - Viva La Vida
Mogwai - The Hawk is Howling
Filter - Anthems for the Damned
Slaves to Gravity - Scatter the Crow

Disappointments:

Nine Inch Nails - The Slip
Lenny Kravitz - Love Revolution
Gavin Rossdale - Wanderlust

not been much this year for me. The ones that stick out are -

Death Magnetic - Metallica
Twilight of the Thundergod (Amon Amarth)
Avenged 7fold S/T (was that this year??)
Saints of Los Angeles by Motley Crue

For Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver, if you like Nick Drake you will love this minimal masterpiece.

Shihad - Beautiful Machine
Opeth - Watershed

I like Death Magnetic but it just seems to be missing something special. Plus it is hard to listen to in its entirety due to the complete lack of dynamics. I have quieter Slayer albums!

Perfect Symmetry by Keane - just fantastic.

However... Strangely (for me) I still haven't got the new Metallica or Guns and Roses albums...

Glasvegas - although I have a feeling you might need to be from Glasgow or at the very least Scottish to 'get it'.

That. MGMT 2nd.

Only by the Night track 1-4 and 9-11 are excellent. 5-8 are incredibly dull and ruin the album.

Really? It's a good album, but it's nothing new musically. I think the MGMT album really pushes sound on; especially good heard through headphones.
