Interesting that there's no mention of Hendrix yet.

It's also hard with these "polls" not to become votes for favourite rather than impressed by musicians.

I'd have to start by pointing out either guitarists' guitarists, like Clapton, Hendrix, Page, Satriani, Van Halen; and follow with guitarists that belong to hugely popular bands that are rated highly because of that, like Blackmore (and I'm a huge Purple fan), Lifeson, Slash, Richards.

Then there are the guitarists that have "plowed their own furrow", Kossoff, Townshend, Iommi, Gilmour.

And others that have developed their style from previous guitarists, that have then become famous through that, SRV, Malmsteen, Vai.

The trouble with lots of these guitarists is that they were or are part of a great band -- is it the band that were good or the guitarist?

would the band be any better or worse without them?

It doesn't really matter. Is paranoia something you've suffered from for a long time? hehe.

It's all about Chemistry and Soul.

very true

I suppose what I'm getting at is... some guitarists transcend the band they are in and some are "only" ever a part of it...???

I'm no fan of Brian May btw -no heart and soul at all IMHO - they were Freddy Mercury's band boxedin

Transcending the band is a big problem I have with some lead guitarists. Such geetarists should be soloists. Sorry to those who like them, but I mean bods like Vai, Malmsteen, Uli John Roth, etc. TOO MUCH BLEEDING TWIDDLING.

It is no coincidence that the likes of Page, Zappa, Van Halen, Gilmour, Townsend etc use the brilliance of their techniques, and the musicians styles around them to make great music.

Freddie Mercuries band my ar*e. (Never used those terms together before!!)They went downhill as he came to the fore.

I'm really liking the differing opinions here Matey's.

It's a strange thing is Chemistry....

Page any good without Plant,Jones and Bonham?.....nope!
May any good without Fred, Deacy and Roger?.......not really...regrettably
Hendrix any good without Mitchell and Redding....we'll never really know....I reckon not. He was brilliant/the first but there's been a lot better without the hype.
Townsend any good outside The Who......nope!
Vai any good without Zappa/DLR?....mostly widdly pish......Nope!
Satch....Will he be any good with Hagar and RHCP Smith in 'Chickenfoot'?.....CAR CRASH!
Paul Gilbert any good without the constant w@nkathon?....nope!
Blackmore any good after Purple?......Yeah! Rainbow with Dio were actually fookin' magic mostly.......''The Gaaaatess Of Baaaaaabyloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooonnnn!!!''

I still sometimes think.........EVH is still the most influential and inspiring guitarist ever.

Bugger!....I meant to say The Reverend Billy F G!

Buggeration!...I meant to say Michael Schenker!
