Hey, I came across this great song last night and I found it while searching for Trance. It came up as a Genre called Trip-Hop? I have never heard of such a genre before but listen to this song, it will send shivers down your spine. It has a very atmospheric sound to it and it really opened my mind up. Great for writers and artists, good inspiration.

its called "Umbrellas In The Rain" by Helicopter Girl.

It may come off as a bit, erm, shall I say flippy? In other words, I wouldnt want to be caught at a stop light listening to it, but that is more the ego of a young man than anything else, because I think it is great and I downloaded and added it to my list already.

Also, check out on the side bar on Youtube her other song, "Glove Compartment" Its really funky stuff.

From the mid 90's infact.

I had a huge explosion back then and those people couldn't do anything wrong, but the spotlight has turned off them a bit.
You also had Leftfield, which is pretty similar, but they are so unique, they have their own genre.

Sneaker Pimps

Awesome - you can't help but like that

Portishead

Massive Attack

I know! isnt it great! I have Ares instead of itunes and that other one that every one has, but after I found this I just typed in TRIP-HOP in the genre category and hit search. But The End seems to have some links as well! If you find anything worthwhile, please post!

I've listened to it, it's not really the main Trip Hop, it's more on the edge of it.
The song you linked to is far more similar to stuff by BT (A bloke called Brain Transeau )

eg-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGtTRVhMNEQ
BT - 1.618

His style is quite symphonic, but modernised and deconstructed.
His trade mark was Granular Synthesis, which is a sort of time stutter/stretch effect which has caught on and used quite commonly today

For trip-hop from slightly more hip-hop background try the album Entroducing by DJ Shadow. A real classic.

Always on my MP3 player too smile Along with Tricky (who used to be in Massive Attack)
Always looking for new and different music, I will give Helicopter Girl a whirl...

(downloaded quite a few Dead Can Dance tracks too, cannot pigeon hole their music though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkOQPovPU2A )

ETA - I always find that 'proper' late 70's, early 80's reggae has the same effect on me as Trip Hop - great to work to

Well this is what I've come up with:

Massive Attack - Teardrop

DJ Shadow - Building Stream with a grain of salt

Hooverphonic - Mad about you

Thievery Corporation

Lemon Jelly
Zero 7
