As above, I've just ordered one of those "fully loaded" scratchplates to breathe some life into the old Squier. It comes with all the electronice already done. (H/S/H for them's wot's interested) My question is below:

I see the wire to connect to the jack plug, but there's also a thinner one, partially stripped coming off the back of one of the pots. I take it this is to earth it to the actual body of the guitar? What do you recommend? just loosen the saddle and slip it under? Should I solder it to anything in particular? Forgive my memory, it's been ages since I worked on the guts of a guitar. (And quite frankly I wasn't any good at it then!)

google strat shielding or strat wiring -- it never hurts to add some shielding or earths to a cheaper guitar

Well, I was planning on telling you all about it, but I've got to get some more tools. And possibly another scratchplate to load the electronics into. Though I do think it looks pretty "ghetto"! Just need to shift a humbucher 3mm north and I've got it. Buying a drill tomorrow.

I have one more question!
I's all in, soldered up and fixed down. There still seems to be a little trouble with the fudging earth. I've soldered it to the tremolo claw, but sometimes I still get a hum that goes away when I touch the strings with my hand. Does anyone think I should take a wire from the tremolo claw to the underside of the bridge itself? I know the springs should be doing that job, but they're not.

Not more than standard. (so no)
Right then, I'm going for the cheap solution of turning the telly off.

google 'shielding a strat', should give some pointers to minimise the hum as far as practicable.
