The Beatles why does every one think they were so great?

I don't know the answer to the OP.
Their songs all sound the same to me. Nursery rhymes with a guitar and drums.
I really hate lego head Paul McTwatney too. Which doesn't help.
So you think She Loves You, Eleanor Rigby, I Am The Walrus, Helter Skelter & Let It Be all sound the same? I really don't see how, but each to their own I suppose.Their songs all sound the same to me. Nursery rhymes with a guitar and drums.

That is what I think.
And the same with the Beatles tribute band Oasis. Except worse. They are like cheating in an exam but coping the wrong answers down.
My theory is that it's harder to appreciate music older than yourself as it's difficult to relate to. If you were born in the 80's or 90's, then you will have heard all of the successors to the Beatles sound, which will dilute its impact. You won't be able to listen to them without thinking of other bands with a similar sound (so in the Beatles case, that's thousands of bands or artists). Same thing would apply to the Stones, Black Sabbath Sex Pistols, Oasis etc who either developed a new sound or pushed it to a mass market. I can 'get' Oasis more as I was a teenager when they first appeared; the first two albums at least still have a real energy and confidence about them.
Does that make sense?
Does that make sense?
Well that kinda' makes sense, apart from the fact that I like music from several hundred years ago.
Some here don't like The Beatles. That is their choice.
I never play the Beatles, but they had a MASSIVE effect at the time. On me too.
Anyone who says all their stuff was the same hasn't got a clue what they are talking about.
... but there are a lot of those around.

But music isn't like Maths or Science. How you hear something and your personal preference and taste is not something that is measurable as right or wrong by others.... but there are a lot of those around.
To me, it all sounds the same (I didn't say it was the same, as in scientific fact, but sounds the same, to me) and I do know the albums mentioned above by others as being 'different' and to me they don't - there's that Nursery Rhyme formula that is constant, formulaic and dull. That is my opinion, the fact I don't like the way they sound or think they are 'the best thing ever' is my taste.... that does not mean I don't have a clue what I am talking about or that I am wrong.
Because to me, and to many others that exactly is how it is. It's subjective not science....
I'm not going to sum up with a withered old cliché like 'each to their own' as that is even MORE boring and MORE obvious than the Beatles or Oast.

People might be better able to explain what it is that they care about and you don't if you tell them what kind of music you do like. From a quick scan through your posting history, I get the impression that you are unimpressed by subtlety, but that's probably unfair.Personally, I'm not exactly a fan - I think the only Beatles tracks I own are ones I've bought because I've been working on them with my guitar tutor - but they're as much a part of the cultural wallpaper as George Gershwin or Bob Dylan, so like most people I'm familiar with most of their work. I think they've written some songs that will continue to be remembered when the vast majority of 20th century songwriters have been forgotten.
Just on the style issue, do you like this Led Zep?

and this?

And if you like the second one, would you have a different opinion of the composition if you'd only ever heard this version of it?

OP - imagine if all the music you ever heard up until this point was The Beatles, day in day out.
And then today you hear "NWA - fk the police"
that must have been the kind of impact the beatles had on the nation (I was alive during the 60s)
find it very odd that a music lover can't find half a dozen Beatles songs they think are great
unfortunately it never takes long for someone's taste to be called into question! And then today you hear "NWA - fk the police"

Thought it might be People's tastes often broaden. I know someone who, at your age, didn't see any point in music you can't dance to. Ten years later, she likes a much wider range of styles of music. It's just what fits your life and personality at the time. I'd give the Beatles another listen in ten years - you may well never really like them, but you might see why other people do. Mind you, they've been so widely covered, there's a fair chance that you like a Lennon or McCartney song done by someone else - Helter Skelter/Aerosmith, Come Together/GnR/Springstein, Sgt Peppers/Hendrix, Day Tripper/Hendrix, Eleanor Rigby/Godhead, Hey Bulldog/Alice Cooper, etc.

Don't know. Plenty of other singers/songs I prefer far more than most of the stuff the beatles did. I think they were run by the Simon Cowell/Max Clifford of the day to get to that status....as I said in my thread about bands that you just don't get, I don't like many Beatles songs.
however I think they got steadily worse as the years wore on, moving from exuberant young musicians who can't believe their luck to (still unbelievably young) jaded cynical art wkers
Their stregnths for me lay in songwriting - not musicianship
As irritating as Paul McCartney is, his development across the 1960's as a bass player is jaw-dropping
As much as I can't stand him - I wish he could/would still play like that!

The Beatles are obviously not on the same planet as Bach, but they had a style... which was always recognisable.
This is a GOOD thing! It was new, and had a unique quality. So to some, it just sounds the same. To others, it was just a bloody noise (my dad).
ETA... I set 'YESTERDAY' as a study for some music degree students (when I did that sort of thing) - and asked them to analyse it. Not one of them spotted that it was a 7 bar phrase!
