Not sure about base lines but Michael Anythony who used to be Van Halen was awesome.

What about No More Tears, Ozzy Osbourne.

I went to see Level 42 in Sept and Mark King is pretty handy with a Bass.

if we're on fusion jazz vibe how bout Brand X (After Pastorious of course, Percy Jone's gotta be one of the most creative frettless bass players of the 70's )

none of the above.
what are your fav. basslines ?
Sorry... my response did seem a little dismissive! My faves are probably from Bach's Brandeburg concertos. As for bass guitar, well early Pastorious I guess. Thousands have copied him, but he did it first (and I've never heard anyone be so innovative or creative since).

All IMHO of course, (and a bass line doesn't have to be any good to be a fav... it just has to be a fav!) but for the record, I've been a pro bass player for 30 years (and am happy to admit that none of my bass lines would ever appear in a fav bass lines thread!)
Jaco had a style all of his own.

Weather Report's Heavy Weather holds a particular gem for me..."Teen Town", beautiful playing, and the way the bassline intertwines with Zawinuls keyboard, particularly in the bridge is lovely, I'm getting goose bumps just thinking about it.

Latterly, Tony Levin is a bassist I admire a lot - some of his work with Peter Gabriel is worth looking out (although some is playing a Chapman stick rather than a bass)

Re Jazz fusion - I can't get it at I'm still at work, but check out on Youtube "Domino Line" by Casiopea, a Japanese group. Some of the outfits are frankly awful, but the bass solo in the middle of this is jaw droppingly good.

For me, some of the best bass playing i have ever heard was by mick karn when he was with japan. Maybe not strictly what people mean by a good bassline, but hell, that guy could play the fretless like michaelangelo painting the cistine!

My fav. basslines..... best doesn't exist..

Glory of Man - Mike Watt - THe minutemen

Lincoln Highway Dub/Santeria - Eric Wilson - Sublime

neither are technically difficult
both are integral to the song
both have a great sound

as much as i;ve played guitar over the years - those 2 tracks make me pick up the bass every time.

Tons of varied music there, I'll see if I can get some of them off, err, iTunes.

I thought I may have got poked for the Madonna song in my 1st post, didn't even notice I wrote baseline instead of bassline, my medical training kicked in when I was posting biggrin

Martin Turner played some rather tasty lines on the first two Wishbone Ash albums.

Tal Wilkenfield can play a bit too

Can't recall the name of any tracks but lots of stuff by Linley Marthe whilst playing with the Zawinul syndicate.

Agree with lots of suggestions here - one I've always loved is 'Can you dig it' by the Soup Dragons. Nothing special in the grand scheme of things but has something.
You mean the Mock Turtles, not Soup Dragons, I assume winkbiggrin

Plenty of Simon Gallup (The Cure).

As for individual songs, I suggest Stella Was A Diver And She Was Always Down by Interpol.

As I mention the Cure, just been listening to the Faith album, the track Primary is pretty much two basslines running in unison throughout, great track.

I really like this one from Daft Punk - Face to Face:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DFZn56UcVQ

I appreciate it isn't a 'bassline' in the classic sense of the word but I think it's some of the most creative sampling I've heard used in a dance track. And I still can't figure out what they all are!

Also, Jamiroquai, Travelling Without Moving:

Just two that jumped out - there's a billion more...
