That bassline. I'm a sucker for a characterful bass player...
you know what.... i've gone from writing for the guitars (anywhere from 2 to 6 tracks per song) only to having to buy a bass and fill in the basslines too as the bass player has moved away..

i've got 6 and 7 strings going on the guitars and my first toe dip into basses is a 5 string.

with not a lot of wriggling you can create just the right amount of space to sound absolutely ace... but on the downside you can easily strangle it and ruin everything... it's only actually physically having to play the bass now that has made me realise the fine line between perfect bass lines and gratuitous ste...

Missed this comment first time around, sorry.

Which bassists out there are inspiring you right now then?

Devin Townsend has revisited SYL's Aftermath - I'll be honest, he could just fart into a mic and I'd probably enjoy it and it's not that different to the original, but given this post is so quiet I thought I'd chuck a link to it up.

Live in 2006 with Strapping Young Lad for comparison, if only for the hair.

i think guys like sergio vega from quicksand do a perfect job.... from yesteryear i always loved what melvin gibbs did with rollins band..his predecessor in andrew weiss was pretty ace too actually.

from lesser known bands i always thought caleb schofield from cave in did some great work.. the bassline on this, for instance...love it!..boom, straight out the traps.. not complicated but superbly placed within the context of everything else...

also, my favourite basses (got to have one!) are dingwalls... wasn't aware of them until i saw nolly getgood was uising them.. cracking bass player and an absolutely incredible bass sound...

That Dingwall does sound tasty.

Bass is my thing so I could go on and on about my favourite bassists, but at the moment I'm really into Jon Stockman's sound. Seen a few vids now of his setup, but this one is particularly good as he and the host go somewhat into the technical aspects of setup that a lot of people may not be aware of, myself included to some degree.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xykbGJn5THc

Interesting that he plays a Warwick as well - they were always my favourites when mucking about in shops, but they do tend towards a mellow sound. Which makes it interesting that he gets the vast tonal array that he does.

I got rid of my amp recently as it simply hadn't been used in near 20yrs frown I kept my ME-6B though as I just can't part with that - they were fairly rare when I got it about 25yrs ago! I have recently been thinking that once our building work is done I might drag my bass back out of the loft (ESP400), although the neck was never really right on it - it always had a high action and even after a tech did some work on it it was never that easy to play. Or I may splurge on a new one and a small practice amp smile

yeah that "springy" sound to the dingwall is glorious.. i'll have a look at that youtube vid when i get a minute later on...

amos from tesseract used to use warwicks and i must admit the minute i get rid of this marcus miller (first ever bass purchase, so i wanted to test the 5 string waters before splurging a couple grand) the warwicks do seem like a viable option.

now i've bedded in with the idea of thinking like a bass player to compliment what i'm writing for the guitars i'm cofident enough that i will weigh the miller in for something proper before we head into the studio in the summer..

you defo want to jump back in pal... we had over a 20 year gap between our last recorded material and the first instrumental ep we did summer before last( the singer wasn't back at that point).... by the time we record a "proper" ep as a full band again (daft description as i write and play all the instruments except the drums myselfbiggrin ) it will have been just on 23 years since the last one but the writing process has been really cathartic... i've enjoyed every single minute of prep for it and my calluses are as hard as they were back in the 90slaugh

edited to add.... very interesting video that... always had a soft spot for karnivool.. that warwick sounds really versatile...

here's amos from tesseract playing through messenger with his warwick.. nice..

That works for me! thumbup

Did like the sounds coming from that first Warwick too...definitely prefer a brighter sounding bass.

See, that sounds fairly middle of the road to me!

Have you watched the 2nd Jon Stockman vid? His use of effects is sublime, but not for the sake of it. It's all about creating a specific sound to feed into that Karnivool soundscape.

I love his overdriven sound which has real clarity.

i haven't watched the second vid tbh.. will take a look later..... yes, he's very soundscape in his approach, which fits that band perfectly....

i'm really enjoying the journey at the moment but i'm very green to it all... sounds ironic as i've been playing guitar for nearly 40 years!... but i have always thought like, and written like, primarily a guitarist....i've gone from just filling in the space behind and below the guitar tracks i create to actually writing guitar tracks with leaving space for the bass to weave in and out rather than just sit underneath..

I've always been a huge fan of Linus Klausenitzer, previously of Obscura and now in Noneuclid, Obsidious and Alkaloid.

Saw them live a couple of years ago at the Fleece in Bristol and it was absolutely incredible.

Wasn't aware of this. Love both Slip and Interiors.

I seemed to missed them first time round, and only got into them after the the bassist Sergio joined Deftones after Chi's accident
