Just been through from page 1 to here. Unfortunately, a lot of the early 'youtube-only' links are now dead, but there's been some awesome stuff.

Came to see if this was here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOKn33-q4Ao (Funkadelic - Maggot Brain) but surprisingly not!

Not sure I would classify Maggot Brain as 'hauntingly beautiful' hehe

I’ve been mildly obsessed with Sara Bareilles’ version(s) of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. It is utterly breathtaking, and oddly, the only other song that is on my “Perfect” playlist is also a cover; The Carpenters’ End Of The World.

Bareilles has remarkable control of timbre and dynamics, but it is all so natural and without artifice which is why she sits comfortably next to Karen Carpenter.

Here's a cracker from my youth, All About Eve's 'Martha's Harbour'. She has a lovely tone to her voice, even in their less haunting tracks. This track did quite well on the back of a major TOTP fk up when the band just sat waiting for the music to start in their earpieces, while it actually was going out to the viewers at home instead. https://youtu.be/15MY6OfPfyE

I thought that was a great way to protest the lack of live music on television, I was most disappointed the next time I saw Tim Bricheno out in town and he told me what really happened.

Takes me back - saw her live in circa 1980/81 at Hull City Hall.

I think One More Cup of Coffee from Desire... not only beautifully written, but superbly sung too.

https://youtu.be/95cufW4h-gA

Selected verses rather than full lyric:

Your breath is sweet
Your eyes are like two jewels in the sky
Your back is straight, your hair is smooth
On the pillow where you lie
I don't sense affection
Nor no gratitude or love
Your loyalty is not to me but to the stars above

Your sister sees the future
Like your momma and yourself
She never learned to read or write
There's no books upon her shelf

And her pleasure knows no limits
Her voice is like a meadow lark
But her heart is like an ocean
So mysterious and dark

That is very good indeed - will have to listen to some of her other stuff as well.

Hadn't heard of her before your post.... she has quite a voice.

Sorry haven't been through the thread after getting annoyed at dead links with no title or artist in the post.

Agreed. Sam Fender is one of the few highlights of current music imho.
Yep, great talent. These aren’t that haunting, but worth a listen

Sam fender - will we talk - live

Sam fender - the border - live

And to play along with the thread

Nothing But Thieves - Impossible (Orchestral Version - Live at Abbey Road)

The xx - Angels (Official Audio)
https://youtu.be/_nW5AF0m9Zw

Leon Bridges - River (Live on Austin City Limits)

Paolo Nutini - Iron Sky [Abbey Road Live Session]

John Mayer - Slow Dancing In A Burning Room

Maybe a bit off the mark…

I saw Nothing But Thieves earlier this year at the O2-weirdly disappointing but I can’t quite put my finger on why. Impossible is a great song, mind.

Slow Dancing in a Burning Room is another good shout-if you listen to the lyrics they’re all about a doomed relationship that is being clung onto for no reason.

Which leads me nicely onto my next nomination, and I make no apologies for it being another David Gray track…I was lucky enough to be there at the iTunes Festival for this and it’s just glorious.

I also went to see this chap’s band, Del Amitri, who have just released a new album (Fatal Mistakes is well worth checking out, by the way) a 15 odd year hiatus. This is one of his solo efforts, and it’s great in my eyes (well, ears). An extremely talented songwriter and performer.

I think the 1963 version with the 12 year old Roy Goodman is probably the best and truest recording of it. It's written for a male treble, rather than female. Check it out if you've not heard it.
