Most hauntingly beautiful song ever?
Discussion
In terms of being "hauntingly beautiful", many would argue that "A Dustland Fairytale" by the Killers wouldn't count.
It starts off slowly, gets quicker in the middle then ends in an absolute crescendo of words, emotion and instruments in a wonderful combination. Brandon's version where he sings it on the "David Letterman Show" is astonishing. He wrote the song after hearing his mother had a tumour (that she later passed away from) and the words are just, well, haunting.....
"I saw the devil wrapping up his hands, he's getting ready for the showdown..." - like a boxer getting ready for the battle between taking her to hell or to heaven. ..
"Now Cinderella don't you go to sleep, it's such a bitter form of refuge...Don't you know the kingdom's under siege and everybody needs you..."
A plea to his Mum not to die, to stay and fight.
Makes me shudder listening to it.

Not seen this one on here yet...not exactly beautiful considering the subject matter of the song, but definitely haunting, and full of melancholy - love it

Don't know if that could be called beautiful, disturbing, upsetting maybe but....A young Aussie country singer on the mental anguish of selling his parents house that he grew up in.
The folks that he greets through the clip are actual neighbours and childhood friends.
We are currently selling my late in-laws house and also our own of 30 years where our children grew up and has our long departed but forever missed beautiful dog under the frangapini tree so this hits home on so many levels

Heard this played this earlier driving home, a cover, and it took me back to 1976 when it was first released.
Back then in 76 my first thought was it was one of my favourite singers, Gladys Knight, but it wasn't.
Stood, and still stands, the test of time.
Great story behind it too, which began 3 yrs earlier in 1973 when the US singer in question didn’t have a car at the time, so she took the bus to Jackson to Malaco Records, who'd asked her to come in and possibly record a song the owner thought would suit her.
She liked it, so they decided to record it. She sang the song from lyrics typed on a piece of paper and did it in just one take.
The record company shopped major labels to see if they wanted it. They didn't. It stayed hidden. Eventually Malaco released it. Bingo! It took off.
And did so over here too.
She said at the time that the song was meant for her.
She was right.
