Here's an unlikely one for me. There's a video on YouTube called 'Denver the Guilty Dog', which has 53m views! The music playing grabbed my attention and perhaps more so because of Denver being sent to his bed which is so sad. So I searched for the music and here it is.

Another one that gets me tearful is Wires by Athlete. I believe it's about the fellas prematurely born baby and knowing that makes the lyrics that more powerful.

And finally from my very early 20s, The Cure - Sinking. Beautifully depressing!

Same here it came out the year after my first daughter was born prem (although not in ICU), when he sings the lines about tubes going in & out and then "looking at you now, I see it in your eyes" it gets me going. She's just turned 16 and on the odd occasion I play Wires I wonder where that time went and how it can turn out differently for others.

I can imagine how this one gets to you and I'm chuffed it all worked out o.k. How about the line 'first night of your life, curled up on your own'. I can feel the welling starting now just by typing it!

Beautiful track. Tragically the sax player lost the use of one of his hands in a power saw accident.

I'm glad you like it! It's one of those songs that sounds so thoroughly dull at the beginning, you're tempted to just stop. But sticking with it builds to a stunningly melancholic song. And the more times you listen, the better it gets.

No, not dull to me; if anything it's the opening chords that drew me in. Without getting all "theory", it's just a really chilled C / Cmaj7 / F progression to start with. Honestly? I played some "meandering" C major lines over it earlier and, well, the room got a little "dusty" so to speak. I could improvise over that tune until my fingertips bleed.

Let me tell you something really sad. We have, sat in the middle of our lounge, a Bechstein grand piano. My wife and daughter are both musicians and I never hear a note played on that instrument. I however, really feel music and can be moved way beyond the professionals in this house by it. Tiny little details I hear that just don't interest them. Now if I could sit down in front of that Bechstein whenever I felt in the mood and play along to this song... but I've never had the opportunity to learn! weeping

I started learning guitar some 30 years ago, and there are things I'm still learning!

However........

I'm now at a stage where piano lessons are more instructive to me in terms of advancing my musical knowledge.

Search for Bill Hilton on YT; his piano tutorials are great, and not too complex.

That'll be Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins. Now they Have done some consistently beautiful haunting stuff. Fantastic band.

Wintersun - Loneliness
Some harsh vocals will alienate most listeners but the prog-metal theme soars through some delightful arrangements.

“Pour que tu m’aimes encore” by Céline Dion.
I accept that Céline is a tad Marmite to Anglo ears, but this one hits my spot.
It means, “For you to love me again”, and if you can understand some of the lyrics,
you can’t fail to be moved, (well they move me).
e.g. J’irai chercher ton coeur si tu l’emportes ailleurs.
(I’ll go get your heart if you take it somewhere else.)
