Folks,

Wonder if you can help... Have just moved to a new pad with about an acre of garden - mostly woodland rather than 'crown green bowls'.

I'm trying to find a decent 'garden gator / tractor / quad' that's less of a toy and more of a "serious" vehicle that my 6yr old can use around the garden - helping me carry logs, bags of compost, pulling a trailer etc. I'm not interested in the Toys R Us type blow moulded stuff - but wondered if there's anything suitable that anybody might know? He has a quad at the inlaws which he enjoys - but I'm trying to find something as a 'workhorse' rather than a plaything - hence my preference for a small gator style vehicle or small 'tractor'!

Any ideas / help gratefully received!

Short answer is no, there's nothing I'd recommend for a 6yo.

Not for nothing do most quads have stickers on them saying must not be used by riders under the age of 16.

A quad rolling onto a child is never going to end well.

HTH..

Anything big enough to 'carry logs, bags of compost, pulling a trailer etc' will be too big for a six year old, and also very expensive. You're looking at Gators/Kabotas/Mules etc. Too big and too heavy for a 6 year old, they won't reach the pedals.

How about and Argo 6x6 maybe? Would be a good learning curve to drive one, not too speedy and pretty safe all things considered. Plus practical too.

Suspect you could rig up some kind of throttle limiter too if you wanted.

My kids had a quad and a JD Gator at that age - the quad was a little chinky 50cc thing with a remote kill switch - entirely reasonable under adult supervision at that age and with a degree of common sense applied. The Gator was one of the plastic ones they do with a rechargable battery. We still have it and its had loads of abuse although they are too old for it now - thye cannot get themselves in to trouble with it at 6. The could sit next to each other whilst one drove and it has a tipping back - I used to get them to load the kindling wood in it or move a few small plant pots - it wont deal with heavy stuff and can be a struggle on wet or mud but its fine in the dry, the wood and on dry grass. The quad was able to be a bit more off road but did not have the ability to port cargo. Since mine have been over 12 years old they both use an old Ford Ranger pick up and can do proper work now and move a ton of logs quite easily.

Thanks folks and useful thoughts / perspectives.

I'm thinking more along the lines of a toylander or similar rather than a 'full size' quad. I agree with the sentiment re big quads - I'd never let my 6 yr old on them! I've seen a few variants - but think £4k is a bit spicy for something he'll grow out of in a couple of years. I suppose I need a 'cheaper' toylander!

Buy them an Isla bike - once competent get them a osset electric trials bike

Quads are for little girls, farmers, and people who can't ride real bikes.

I purchased the below two years ago and its great:

https://www.fun4kids.co.uk/rocket-rampage-extreme-...

3 selectable speeds from 5mph to 15mph, small enough to lift up into the back of my pickup, full charge lasts about 30-45mins if driven full out or a lot longer if pottering around. charge takes about 4 hrs, nice and quiet so I take to our local green as well.

I was sceptical but well worth the money, he is now 8 and still loves it!
