Diesel values ?

Going forward, do you think the value of newer diesel 4x4's will take a hit ?

Im thinking of moving on from my Grand cherokee 2004WJ to a 2012 WK. There around 17 to 19K on the forcourts now.
But if demand drops away from buyer's who may have commuted in these type of vehicles with the polution worries and city charges, thats gotta make them harder to sell on ?

As I dont drive many miles and dont go into citys it wont effect me unles the goverment wants to hit the road tax cost as well, which they say there not going to do for now at least.
However why buy now if the there cheaper next year by a big margin !

Thoughts ?

I wouldn't think so. I occasionally look at WJ/WKs now and then (usually when the Disco is playing up) - the CRD variants inevitably command a bit of a premium over the petrols. A big 4x4 and a diesel engine kind of go hand-in-hand - the petrol equivalents drink more juice and the price difference would be a fair bit more than the odd congestion charge here and there for those who occasionally foray into cities.

People look at the monthly cost of filling them up - hence the diesels get snapped up in preference to the petrols. For most used buyers, the values of a DERV 4x4 will probably remain higher than an equivalent petrol model for this reason. If you do low miles and can put up with the idea of a higher fuel bill - your same budget would probably get a newer, low mileage, higher spec petrol WK. If that doesn't apply, the CRD makes sense every day of the week.

Unless they whack a huge additional duty on diesel per litre - I think diesel will still be desirable in the larger 4x4s simply due to the torque and economy advantages. That won't change anytime soon.
