Best 4x4 for ski trip
Discussion
Did the same type of trip in my Hilux Surf last year on ATRs. No issues at all.
Tyres are your friend in this. Decent winters or all terrains are what you want. Normal road tyres are a no no..... on my ATRs I didn't even need the snow chains I took with me. I drove through a lot of snow and ice.
And for your budget you could buy 10 of them!

4x4?
You planning on driving around the slopes?
We've done several trips with Smax & XC60: both fwd: decent distance between fill-ups, comfortable (very, in the case of the Volvo!)
Winter tyres, as others have said, are a must: I've gone breezing up mountains in the Smax with others literally putting their chains on....
Spend the cash on decent winter tyres and Thule easy-fit chains: the first time you need to use them in a blizzard you WILL thank me!!
Also book into an underground car park: once you've had to dig your motor out of 4' of snow, you will regret not doing that!
Oh, get a SANEF doofer to breeze through the tolls....take plenty of snacks and ideally have adaptive cruise to make the miles relaxing!

D4s are below £15k now.
Christ on a bike! They depreciate fast !! 120k miles £13500, 76k miles £16000 . Quick look on auto trader. Bargain, especially the second one, tho only an XS. I don't like blank buttons :-)Bought my D3 hse for £10k with 118k miles 3 years ago . Up to 140k so far with no major issues . Love the thing. No D4s were under £20k at the time.
I’ve been driving a Nissan Pathfinder (old shape 08 model) now for the past 5 years, and it's made regular trips to the Scottish Ski Resorts. (I live in NE Scotland). With the rear most seats folded down I can fit both mine & the Wife’s ski's in the boot diagonally, along with all the other skiing paraphernalia for us and the kids.
It’s always got us where we wanted to go, often where other cars couldn’t.
Admittedly not the most refined drive, but it’s got all the bells and whistles on it (Sat Nav, leather seats, DVD player in the back for the kids etc) and I find it quite comfortable to drive on the motorway and regular 10 mile each way commute as long as you accept its humble Pick-Up based origins and don’t expect to be able to hussle it along. Fuel economy is woeful through +/- mid 20’s MPG.
It’s 10 years old now with 120,000 miles yet the only significant bill has been to replace the front propshaft after vibration started from wear.
Been great up here during the recent wintery “Beast from the East” conditions.
Boot is truly massive, swallows up all our skiing / camping gear etc. without having to then fit a roof box or tow a trailer etc.
Handy rear top hinged window still allows access to the boot for when you are using the tow bar.
