Recommended Off Road venues?

One of the main reasons for wanting this forum in the first place - where does everyone go off roading?
We're planning a Thames Valley outing to a place near Aldermarston in March, but it would be good to get details of more, as most only seem to be open one weekend a month.
I am particularly interested in any around Somerset as well, as I promised my 5yr old that we could take her Grandad off roading next time we're down in Ilminster!

I'd love to go on the PH Off Roading trip, but my inconsiderate sister is having her baby christened on the 9th 
We're based in Kent so our main off road centres are:
Woodlands - near Brands Hatch. Quite small but plenty of obstacles to drive through and get stuck in. Some people get bored if their off roaders are too good because of the size though.
Bures (Link removed as they seem to have a virus on the site) - near Colchester. Big open area that varies from deep water to very steep hills and massive mud holes.

I'm a regular at Avon Dassett near Banbury/Leamington. Future4x4 have monthly pay-n-play events and weekend campouts. Typicaly 15 quid for the day.

I am very new to this, just purchased a £1500 discovery and its totally standard.. I would love to have a go in some proper mud and im in Bucks, so have heard about Whaddon.. however i dont want to turn up somewhere and make a pillock out of myself in a standard disco, if everyone has got serious kit .. .is this the case??

Why don't you come along to the PH Thames Valley & Surrey off-roading day at Aldermaston on March 9th? £26 for the day, just turn up and have fun, plus they've got graded sections - white for complete novices on road tyres, red for slightly more adventurous on all terrain tyres, black for full on mud-plugging rollcage wearing nutters in crash helmets!Take a look at the TV&S thread and you'll see that there's a whole range of experience. I only got my Shogun 10 days ago, so it's new for me too!

A standard disco will still be more capable than most people have bottle in lots of ways.
Just make sure you stay out of the deep, thick stuff and you still have your towing eyes accessible. These aren't designed for off road recovery (ie, yanking the car out of 2ft mud), but stick to the less sticky terrain and you can still get recovered if you just get a little stuck.
Bring a shovel though and if you can get any decent recovery ropes bring them too. If you do want to buy any kit, I'd suggest tracmats first, so if you get stuck, you can dig out a small trench and put the tracmats under the wheels for traction.
But at an event like this, there's bound to be people around to help out. I should be there and have recovery gear so look out for the PH smilie

i live in Taunton and there's loads of us down here.
havea look at www.4x4adventures.co.uk as they organise accopmanied off road days- usually 6 vehicles with 2 guides that allow you to have fun normally in a thousand or so acres of off road space- i've now done 4 of them (which is surprising as they are quite friendly for standard vehicles)and i drive something totally unstandard. They are just setup perfectly.
you might also check the "getting out and about" bit of forums.lr4x4.com as a large % of the forum live in the southwest and there are usually pay and plays being advertised.
