10 year old thread, but stick a bmw 3.0 straight six in!
Aparently that's what SA defenders had?
My puma engined defender goes great after a remap.
SA models used the 2.8 engine from an e36 328i. 193hp if I recall. Aparently that's what SA defenders had?

3.0 litre is possible. But a fair chunk of work. And the gearbox probably isn’t up to the job.
It depends completely on what you want to do with it.
I gave my 200tdi a good service, regularly check the valve clearances, did the fuel pump pin mod and gave my intercooler a flush. It will now hold a 3 ton trailer at 60mph all day long, even up slight inclines.
I’ve been in one supposed 150hp Discovery, fuel modded, full width intercooler etc and was very disappointed, it felt no different but just produced smoke.
If you want genuine performance, you need a TD5 or a completely different engine.
Dave!

@Richard Harris, you can improve the power of a 200TDi buy installing a hardened boost pin along with a dynamic timing spacer, both are easy to install and both are available from Stegs Supplies https://stegs4x4.co.uk/
The pin is a genuine Chris Mason hardened pin, and the dynamic spacer has genuine Bosch O rings.
You could consider a VNT turbo and PWR intercooler, both of which are available from https://irbdevelopments.com
