4 X 4 car for on / off road use

Landrovers don't seem to be very tough.
There is a route I take over a mountain range and through a jungle that involves a lot of bumps and humps and a fairly shallow river crossing.
I do it in a Landcruiser, no problem at all.
Friend does it in a Defender and got a hole in his engine block where the suspension kept hitting it.
Someone else did it in a brand-new Defender and got stuck in the river with a knackered engine.
A different person did it in a Range Rover, ditto.
All stock cars, no snorkels or anything.
