normalbloke seems to have come to my defence smile - thanks Kermit power for your genuine vision and offers of advice.

The project in my 'head' may well be hard to comprehend - but the idea of a road capable upright, fast (but I admit somewhat clumsy) 4x4 is my vision of a cheap G55 or the insane Nissan Patrols with tuned turbo petrol engines as found frequenting the Middle East and displayed humiliating several well know sports cars on youtube videos.
In that case, you need a Bowler Wildcat. Starting out with a Defender which is designed to be off-road more than on and then attempting to lower it and use it to embarrass sports cars just isn't going to happen.

Not unless you've got a huge budget, anyway.

In which case, you'll end up building a Bowler Wildcat. smile

How about a VW type 25 synchro with a Subaru conversion?

That has been done before though!

I would love to build something to the level of a Wildcat, but kp if you were party to my previous car projects you would then realise that many pipe dreams have been and gone and the ones that made reality were done on shoestring budgets and often with misguided priorities.

Surely the OP is describing a Pajero / Shogun evolution??? ~300bhp and a more road biased set-up than other 4x4s

The guy who used to run one of the Paj owners' clubs has one of those. He never took it off road, as the suspension setup was so hard that it was unusable below about 30mph over bumpy stuff! hehe
