Hi all, I recently received an offer of employment in Dubai which unfortunately fell through due to the current economic situation. This morning I have been contacted about a role in Qatar and the company wants to have a telephone interview with me tomorrow.
I am just trying to find out more about Qatar and wondered if anyone here has any experience of living / working in Qatar.

Yes I agree it would be foolish not to visit before making such a move and presuming the telephone interview goes well then the next interview would be in Qatar anyway. We would use that opportunity to have a look around. (same as we did with the Dubai offer)
My only concern is that you cant fully understand in just a week what it would be like to live somewhere. Hence though it was asking a question here.

I am there every month and only got back on Monday from a 2 day trip. I have been going over for about 8 years now a couple of things are...
1) Traffic, it's bad. Very bad.And getting worse.
2) You cannot get pork over there, at all.
3) Nightlife and restaurant scene getting better all the time, I can recommend Bentleys Grill at the Ramada.
4) Make sure your house is fully plumbed into the phone/internet lines, a friend of mine moved into a house 14 months ago and is still waiting to be connected.
5) Obviously v hot in summer.
6) Qatar MotoGP is cheap and well worth attending.
7) Loads of O&G projects still being awarded so business unlikely to dry up in the short term in this area.

kedSaudi has also been a no in mind and not without reason looking at the views so far. All being well I'll take a trip to Qatar in the next 3 weeks and spend some time looking around, hopefully it will take more than 5 minutes....
I guess like anything its realative to where you live at the moment and Im not in the most happening area of Berskhire at the moment !!!!
They at least have a better financial base than Dubai, thinking about it how long is the drive from Qatar to Dubai or are there lots of el bargain flights (something for the weekend):-)

There are plenty of things to do here if you look for them. Qatar is really bad at advertising events. There are plenty of places to go out in the evening (Bentleys does a great steak though).
The traffic is only really bad at certain places as they are doing a lot of road improvements at the moment. Plenty of flights to the UAE for reasonable money, but you will need an exit visa from you sponsor (and no traffic fines).
