Just reading through the 'things which may affect your application' list on the MSA website...

Mental conditions are listed but it then mentions the ICD10 list, which has some pretty specific descriptions.

I used to suffer from depression and anxiety and I'm still on medication for it, does anyone know if this would affect my application?

I also suffer from Hypothyroidism, which is controlled by medication, I'm not sure if this will be an issue.

I don't want to spend loads of money on ARDS, car prep, spares, racewear etc to fail because of the medical.

Can anyone help?

Contact the MSA first, they're pretty helpful.

I've sent an email off but thought I'd ask on here too, there's a lot of knowledge floating around here.

The main thing is to check whether your medication is on the banned list, There was someone on here or another forum that had anxiety and depression in the past and had no problems obtaining his licence but in the long run a phone call to the MSA is a cheap way of finding out, if they wont commit then they'll give you advice on what steps to take.

Get the medical done first. Few GPs are familiar with motorsport requirements, so ask the MSA about your medical history before you see them.
I read of several others in similar positions who have found the MSA helpful, even someone who for perfectly good medical reasons was taking daily opiates, morphine-like medication.

Northamptonshire.

I've got a medical sorted so I guess that's the first thing really, then we'll work from there.

Antidepressants are unlikely to affect your application, however you will be required to get a letter from your doctor saying no adverse side effects, plus you will not be able to renew online, you’ll need a letter each year (personal experience, not going into it any further for personal reasons, other than to say my doctor thinks, and I quote, ‘it’s bloody ridiculous and intrusive’).

I can second this (was prescribed AD's to help with post-op IBS) - with the exception that I only had to do a report for year 1 (year 2 onwards they were happy to leave it as-is). The lack of online renewal is annoying but other than that it's been pretty straightforward.

Every two years if you time your applications right.
