2018 UK Targa/Road Rallying Thread

Cotswold Targa Rally, 22nd July 2018.
This event is new for this year with the specific aim of introducing beginners to targa rallying. Kemble is perfect for this as it is straightforward and smooth allowing anyone to have a go even in a standard road car.
We are limiting the entry to 35 cars to make it a compact day (11:00-16:00).
This event is closed-to-club meaning no MSA competition license is required. Membership to Bath motor club for the remainder of the club year is included with all accepted entries.
The driving tests event will be one to two miles long on the sealed surfaces at Kemble. The course layouts will vary during the day creating an enjoyable competitive days sport.
We hope that this event will allow begineers and novices the opportunity to compete and learn.

I think the Gun Club was my favourite test! It was almost like a closed public road stage in Belgium with a wee bit grass. They were all good, Philiskirks was real bumpy but fun to drive. We got a bit lost on Sherburn first time round, and saw 85mph on the speedo.
Yes it was an honour to share the event with Ron and John, big heroes of mine from when Ron won Mull with Mike Kidd then came back for the non-closed road event in 1988 with his wife navigating.
Many thanks to you and all the team
We were one car behind you on the road some of the day in the V8. Sherburn was slower this year than last!!The tests were all really good, one was a little on the rough side for our old car, so we took it a bit steady on both runs. Some tests were mega slippy and to be honest I don't think gravel tyres would have made much difference, we run winter tyres.
The food arrangements at Lunch time were a problem, luckily we spotted the convenience store next door that had some good sandwiches.
Our most local event and good fun. Missing the Lake district classic, Northern Dales, and Bluestreak due to other commitments but hope to be out on the Doonhamer, Wearside, and Solway.
Would love to do the Mull Targa but as we don't trailer its maybe pushing things a bit although I know one or two did the Mull event and the Solway in the same weekend.
These Targas are fun and you don't need anything more than standard car on some of them.

Hi, ran as car 34 (silver focus) on the Ilkley targa. Finished 24th. Great day out. But does anyone have any pics/clips on tests?
Thanks
John
Hi checked my camera and I have a shot of you on the start line at Tockwith. I can’t do anything with it at the moment as I’m on holiday, but if you PM me an email address I will send you a file when I get home next week. Thanks
John

Useful info from the MSA:
It interested me that once again the MSA avoided Road Rallies. Disregarding the fact that a navigational rally is practically the same thing. Do they consider you can’t do a road rally in a standard car, or is that they don’t want to admit they still exist.velocemitch said:

Putting hill climbing and sprinting under "speed" rather than skill will probably slight a few, overall a strange diagram.. velocemitch said:

To be honest I have very mixed feelings about the traditional road rallying. Cars which are miles quicker than anything used in the MN days, competing to the second on open public roads, without the kind of spectator safety measures you see on stage rallies....it makes me rather uncomfortable. Not to mention crew without head protection. I've never attended one, but from what I can see the "average 30mph" is achieved by, shall we say, clever means. If I was the MSA I'd probably want to keep it underground as well. But then again, my wee banger saw 85mph on a Targa rally!
Back on the maps this coming Friday night, navigating on SouthSea MC's Beginners' 12-Car rally.
I used to navigate quite a lot, with some success in North East Scotland, between 1988 and 1999, but since then and moving down south, only been on the maps twice......
Let's see if my eyesight is up to it!

Quick report on this - as expected it was great fun! Southsea MC sure know how to put on a good 12-car.I used to navigate quite a lot, with some success in North East Scotland, between 1988 and 1999, but since then and moving down south, only been on the maps twice......
Let's see if my eyesight is up to it!
The first section was our downfall, we got stuck behind some tourist traffic for a couple of miles at (what felt like) 5mph, not long after that cleared, we pulled over to let some oncoming general public past and the road edge collapsed, leaving us grounded on the sumpguard!
Very helpfully, the next competitor (who'd also been held up by the tourists) pulled us out, then we let another car past while we did up our belts etc. That was a mistake as he was a fair bit slower than us and didn't let us past for a while, so we couldn't make up all our lost time. Hence, by TC2 we'd already dropped 2 mins. We cleaned the rest of the rally - no fails nor missed codes - but another crew had cleaned the whole rally so we came 2nd o/a.
The eyesight was a struggle, my Accommodation isn't brilliant, so I ended up swapping reading glasses on and off.....and as a result plotting on the move was giving me nausea.
Any helpful hints?
Anyway, I enjoyed my return to the maps, and first time out in a Rover. I do need a lot of practice tho -so far I think I favour driving...

FWIW I wear half-moon-type reading glasses the whole time when I'm on the maps. I recommend spending as little time as possible looking outside - you've got a driver to do that for you. The main exception being when looking for a junction, as drivers are renowned for missing them.Any helpful hints?
I had a special pair of bi vocals made, the reading section was higher than normal so I got a good view of the map. I had to deliberately lift my head higher to look out and the distance vision wasn’t good. In the dark you don’t need it, as long as you can see a code board and a junction it’s enough. As noted above head down most of the time is the best way.
Fantastic time at the Washingpool Targa a few weeks back. Was worried when I saw it was mostly grass but some fantastic fast and flowing tests with top notch organisation. Bonus that I managed to pick up 1st in class (novice) and 9th overall in the little Micra!
Next run out for the Micra is unknown of now, need to remove the ton of dust from the interior and check what damage I did when I came down hard on the sump guard, spotlights (mounted to the front crash bar) have moved up so not going to look pretty... Mate on 2nd driving duties manaed to give the micra its first battle scar too..
Got the Cotswold targa on Sunday, usual nav/2nd driver cant do it so I've convinced a friend to have a go in my mx5, let see if his opinion of rallying (boring, you don't race against anyone) changes come the end of the day...

Ross Traders historic for me this weekend in the 911. There is a Targa class but as far as I can see just one entry!.
Should be a good event though, excellent organisers.
Don't remind me - a regular event for me, but having had the 944 written off a few weeks back, no chance. Should be a good event though, excellent organisers.

21st over all and first in class ( expert cat 2) pretty happy with that, given the level of competition. Probably the strongest field in a HRCR event for quite a while.Should be a good event though, excellent organisers.
Mull Targa Rally is running again this year:

I’ve been helping secure the route and we should be able to put on an even better event - less rough roads, more longer/smoother gravel tests, more compact route and some short sharp regularities.
