Hi there,

I have recently been thinking about trying some UK circuit racing, having competed in the scottish and british hillclimbs and sprints over the last few years. There is 3 sprint/hillclimb cars in the garage that have been 'collected' ( not been able to sell!) over the years and it would be good if any of these could be converted to run in a race series. All the cars are single seaters and would need work for them to run any distance but this could done relativly easily, it is more a matter of where they could race. So, the 3 cars are:

Pilbeam Mp57, 1987 which used to run a 2.8L Hart 4 cylinder approx 450kg. Unfortunatly the engine has a cracked block so it would be quite possible to fit a suitable 2 litre. This car is also a ground effect car,but again this could be changed.

Pilbeam Mp58, 1989 with a 600bhp 3.5L DFR V8 engine, approx 500 kg

Pilbeam Mp88, 2003 with a 685bhp 4.0L Judd KV4 F3000 engine, approx 450kg

I know that the DFR could be put in an F1 chassis and race Historic F1 and that the KV4 could be returned to a F3000 and race Euro Boss but unfortunatly this would be too much financially.

I think the most probable solution would be to put a 2 litre in the Mp57, but im sure i read a report in the club section of autosport that there was a hillclimb pilbeam racing at Angelsey( think it ran out of fuel as well!) this year which is what got me thinking.

Any advice or info you could give me on where any of these cars could race, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Stu

Crikey. Well, at a guess you could try and fit a Standard Zetec or Vauxhall to the MP57 and use it in Monoposto (standard ferrous block engines) but it would also have to run at 40m ride height.

Alternatively, and probably better, would be to have a look at Irish Formual Libre. There's no equivalent in the rst of the country that I can think of.

Could the Pilbeams be used in EuroBoss? You'd need to squeeze a bigger fuel tank in, I guess, and the aerodynamics would need to be changed!

Thanks for the reply, i've been having a good look at the monoposto website and it looks like a good bet from what i can see on the website. I'll send off an email to them and see if i can get some proper regs.
I dont know if you could race the pilbeam in euroboss. From what they say on the website,I think that it has to have belonged to a series? Also, running costs must be unbelievable!

Hard to imagine any sensible race series where an open wheeler with that much performance could compete on an even basis. Perhaps sell one and replace it with a formula car? Surely they wouldn't be hard to sell, if you could bring yourself to.

Unfortunatly, there seems to be more interest in modern technology motorbike engined single seater's than old, big power cars. i think putting a vauxhall in the mp57 for monoposto is a very likley scenario if it's allowed. I only asked about the two big cars because of what i saw in autosport about angelsey, i'm sure there was a hillclimb pilbeam that ran out of fuel racing against similair F3000/F3 type cars.

I was hoping someone would know what i was talking about?

I know! The car in question was Alan Kessie's Judd-powered MP57, racing in Irish Formula Libre at the Leinster Motor club's Anglesey meeting. He actually had a 7th place with a misfire on the Saturday & won Sunday's race - he finished 5th in the championship.

Take a look at http://www.formulalibreireland.com/

Alan Kessie's car is the green one, car 15, in the photo at the top of the Anglesey report...an impressive machine!
