Hi All,
Does anyone know of a good place to start with sponsorship?
We have a small 3 car race team based in the south east. We run 3 MGB race cars with Lotus K-Series engines in so the cars generate quite a bit of interest in magazines etc.
We have quite alot to offer to a sponsor but we just need to find somewhere to start.
Anyone got any ideas?

ask yourself a few questions.
what form do you want sponsorship?
do you want money? products? advice?
Whats the real reason? just to ease your wallet? if so give up now.
why do you think you will benefit from sponsors? sadly because you cant afford it wont cut it.
What do you have to offer that is unique?
everyone can offer stickers on the car. some crappy tesco sausage rolls. and some tickets. so why would the choose you? what else is there you have to offer?

its quite a niche championship so you will have to first hunt for either MG or classic car specific potential sponsors then widen your net, I dont think you can approach small comapnies in this climate though and essentially say "give me cash to indulge in my hobby" without almost guaranteeing them some good return - and i do not consider ten minutes at half past nine on a Tuesday evening on Motors TV good return!
i dont think you are going to get a sponsor with cash in hand as its club championship with minimal exposure so the best you can probably hope for are some free parts in return for some sticker space and the usual club standard "hospitatlity" which might be enough for your and the sponsor. i guess its expectation management.
its a shame though as the cars look fun and are well presented.

Its very very difficult!! I tried to get sponsorship a while back and while I had a bit of interest nothing ever came of it because I didn't present myself well enough or think the whole deal through well enough. Its also a very time consuming process!
If you are really serious about it there are a few books which are useful such as "sports sponsorship getting your share" by Brian Sims. Decent information is actually quite difficult to get hold of as are the books on the subject and all the people I know who have pulled proper sponsorship off have always had the help of sombody with experience of marketing etc at a high level.
Its also worth bearing in mind that out of all the people you see with various sponsors on their cars or whatever very few are genuine sponsors I'd guess about 90% are friends, family, personal businesses etc.
If you try though remember the golden rule is its not what they can do for you but what you can do for them!
