Hi,

Just wondering if there are any local teams who would like an extra pair of hands to make tea / help prep car / promote your team to possible sponsors etc.

I'm looking to get involved in motorsport before I commence my degree in Motorsport Technology which starts in September in which I will be learning all manner of things involving prepping vehicles, manuafacturing parts, development...

While I'm a total novice in most respects now, though know how to make a good cuppa wink I'm willing to learn and help in any way that I can!

Please get in touch if you would like an extra pair of hands.

try shenpar if they are still going or mellors elliot motorsport, both of whom are chesterfield based. I think Fortec are based in Sheffield?. Other than that there are I am sure some local club racers who could do with some help.

cough cough. if you're volunteering your services for free there's a little underfunded chesterfield based tvr race outfit crying out for help this season. Everyone mucks in at the track, an extra pair of (intelligent and enthusiastic) hands would be good .. we were supposed to have a tutor from mansfield college with us last year but it all fell through frown will you be at the next midlands meet?

Where are you doing your motorsport degree?

We are based near Mallory Park and are doing Britcar this year with 2 Sagaris GT Cars. Although we only work evenings and weekends as we have full time jobs frown We have rounds at Silverstone and Donnington this year. We could always use extra hands.

Tollbar Racing might be worth a shout?

Run ginettas juniors that supports the BTCC i think?

Based just outside Matlock on the road out towards Chatsworth somewhere from memory.

Mallory park was mentioned above - they have a race school, Everyman Racing, which have a fleet of Formula Vauxhall single seaters, amongst other things, and even a couple of ex F1 cars (a Tyrrell 017 is one, I think). You could do worse than ask them if they have any work experience available and if you are prepared to work for free, as you imply, then why would they turn you down! I think they also run track days at Wymeswold airfield in Leicestershire, too. Worth a phone call, anyway.

Only ask as my son is doing a National Diploma in Motorsport Engineering at Myerscough nr Preston and is looking for somewhere to do a degree when he finishes July 2010. Only problem is that he is only 15 (he done 14 GCSE's 2 years early at school)and we had trouble finding somewhere to take him at his age. This may also be a problem when it comes to degrees.

There are lots and lots of people doing degrees in Motorsport Engineering but very few places for professional employment. Might be better off doing a more general degree in Engineering or Mechanical Engineering etc as this gives loads more options when you graduate but you could still work in motorsport. In the mean time work as a "gofer" for as many race teams as possible at weekends and try to work your way up to getting practical, "hands dirty" experience as a mechanic. You'd be amazed at the number of people that do Motorsort engineering degrees and expect to work for Williams but haven't actually touched a car outside of their course time.

One of his tutors has said that he thinks he would be better doing a Motorsport Engineering Degree as it would give him better qualification than the Motorsport Management Degree they do at Myerscough. We are presentlty looking into the best way forward. He has been working with us at Mallory Race Tech since he could hold a spanner and helped design and build the 4 Sagaris race cars we have made he spend all his spare Saturdays with us and also attends all race meetings so he does not lack hands on experience.
He has a very good understanding of set up and handling of a race car. The National Diploma he is doing at the moment has worked out very well as it is teaching him the basics like engine and shock building which he has not done with us.

That sounds really excellent, but I still reckon he'd be better off doing a general or mechanical engineering degree and the combination of that, his practical experience with you and the National Diploma in Motorsport Engineering will be better in the long run than if his academics are solely focused on Motorsport Engineering at this stage.

Maybe it would but I'm afraid it's Ferrari F1 for him however long and however much effort it takes.smile
