My degree is quite good actually you do two years FdSc Motorsport Technology then you can choose to progess onto either BSc (Hons) Motorsport Technology or a BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering, I think this is really good that you do have that choice and you don't have to decide straight away!

I wish i could have my time again, I wouldnt have messed about in film and tv in my early days, just gone straight for an emgineering course. Would someone please give me my first 25 years back please I'd like to do them again!
Hindsight is a wonderful thing as they say, I wish I'd done my A Levels straight from school but learn a lot for not doing so! Did you get my email?
Sorry to jump in on your thread Nic, but I am also looking to get back into Motor Racing by helping local teams out.
Based just north of Nottingham, I have had experience in the past (nearly 10 years ago)of trackside weekend support with Caterhams and saloon cars and raced a couple of seasons myself. I also used to be a mechanic so know my way around a car but obviously I am a bit rusty after being away from it for so long.
Sorry for the interruption of the thread, just thought it would be useful to keep it all together.

We are based near Mallory Park and are doing Britcar this year with 2 Sagaris GT Cars. Although we only work evenings and weekends as we have full time jobs We have rounds at Silverstone and Donnington this year. We could always use extra hands.
When are you at Silverstone? I'm very local and willing to lend a pair of hands at the weekend. Like others, currently studying Motorsport Engineering, have some experience from working in a team in the MINI Challenge in 2007, Also marshalled Britcar 24hr in '06 so not entirely unfamiliar with it. Would love to get involved if I can.Best of luck, cheers!

Maybe it would but I'm afraid it's Ferrari F1 for him however long and however much effort it takes.
I'd have thought the best bet would be to contact all the big teams and ask them... similar to the way hamilton went and asked RD..Your lads already got a bit of a usp being a couple of years ahead.. at the f1 level its very specialized and they tend to go for 1st class degrees from the best universities.
A mate of my brother-inlaw works for F1 Admin. he has a phd and was in charge of the start light gantry for a couple of seasons before moving on to the in car cameras etc.!!!
Does you lad have an idea which area he'd like to work. hands on mechanic/ race engineer or specialist development...
I'd get him to write to all the f1 and big GT teams, prodrive etc.. outlining his experience, age what he's doing now... what he wants to do and ask them what sort of qualifications and experience they would like to see if they were to employ him..

He has already written to most of the F1 teams and had some good replies but most are unable to be too specific as there are many roads into F1. All however sugest an engineering degree.
The main problem is what is the best university and will they take him when he is 16?
He already works for a top GT Team

Brunel, Hertfordshire, Central Lancashire, Loughborough, Oxford Brookes, and Swansea IIRC all offer auto/motorsport related degrees. Very difficult to comment on which is best, each does things differently. I can only comment on my experience at Brookes - theory heavy, almost no social life (!) and not much hands-on for the first few years, plus the Formula Student team is a case of 'too many chiefs, not enough indians', but it is well worth doing. I imagine giving the universities a call and asking about their entry requirements would be an idea, or perhaps contacting UCAS.He has already written to most of the F1 teams and had some good replies but most are unable to be too specific as there are many roads into F1. Many thanks for everybody's comments
I suppose a thread 'What is the best university for motorsport' doesn't exist does it?

With his Sag experience I may need to borrow him for a whileI'd be surprised if him getting into a good university at 16 would be a huge problem plenty have done it in the past, especially the oxbridge red bricks..
My uncle and aunt are lecturer's / professors I'll ask them for some pointers..

He sounds like he has done more in his first 16 years than most people in their first 30 or 40! I would have though such commitment and enthusiasm could only be greeted warmly by any university, the maturity of attitude at 16 must surely count for a lot, I know I would view it as such
