Anyone else running in the Abingdon CARnival sprint this weekend? It's my first event, so I'm looking forward to it with some trepidation.

I'm not running, but I'll be there with the Stratos Enthusiasts' Club. There are nine Strats competing on Saturday & three on Sunday.

I'll be there both days. We'll be set up right by the start line in the middle of the runway on Saturday. You can't miss us, they'll be upwards of 20 Stratos replicas there!!

What are you driving? I'll look out for you. Or seek me out, my details are on my profile.

I think I'm the only Z4. I must admit that seeing all those Stratoses was one of the attractions that led me to book up.

Good to speak to you Carl, albeit briefly. Here's a photo of your car.

Nice, thanks! If you have a high-res version feel free to e-mail it to me.

I think this is your car, but I gave the camera to my dad as I didn't have time to take the photos (or anywhere to put the camera during runs).

I was really impressed with the Stratoses - how can you tell which are the originals are which are Hawks? Apart from the ones on Q-plates and those plastered with 'HAWK CARS'. I think interior cooling may be a problem as most of the time they were pootling about on the return from the end of the course the drivers had the door open. Personally, I did all of my runs with the aircon on smile

Yep, that's mine alright. smile

All sixteen of the Strats today were replicas from two manufacturers, Hawks and Corse. he easy way to tell them apart from the originals is that the real ones are all left hookers. Most of the reps are right hand drive.

There are differences between Hawk repicas & Corse cars. However, they are hard to distinguish by the casual observer.

You're right about lack of fresh air into the cockpit, it's a bugbear of the dsesign.

Did you enjoy your day? Have you caught the bug?

Did you see the split window Moggie? What was he running????!

Ah yes, I also have a pic of the moggie. I think the finals said he was 2 litres, not sure what that engine would be? But it's pretty clear that's not a standard air filter mounting...

I'm planning on doing Debden on 12 July next. Not sure about Longcross on 19 July yet.

BTW was there a Stratos with a V8? One of them certainly sounded very fruity in comparison to the others. I know that Lancia threatened Ferrari that if they didn't supply the Dino V6 that they'd use the V8 from the Maserati Bora instead. Has someone done something similar?

funny enough by chance I saw your car parked outside your house ( I assume) on Friday, noticed the Hanger 111 sticker and wondered who its was as I have not seen it at a sprint before. See you at Debden then.

Hi Guys

Have lurked for a long time but first post on PH. Had a great day in the sunshine at Abingdon yesterday, although a bit sunburnt. The collecton of Stratos looked fantastic. Only second time out sprinting in the new car for me, so pleased it was a dry day....

Ah, we did wonder about the wisdom of bringing an 09-registered GTR. I never got to see you run as you were shortly behind me, but I have some vid clips and there's no drama at all -- it just goes and then picks up speed at an incredible rate.

I think I spoke to you in the morning about how it was possible to work out when to leave the paddock as you couldn't see the queue from there?

Was really impressed with the speed of the Westfield SEight too. Pity I didn't get to see any of the race cars running as they were always on the other course.

I did think about it, briefly, but feel if you have a car like this you have got to find a way of driving it as was intended. Past experience of track days, particularily in a heavy car is that they realy take their toll.

That said I was meant to be at Curborough the previous week, but seeing the weather forcast decided to give it a miss. Seeing the other thread on here looks like it was a wise decision.

Would have liked to have had another couple of runs on the Abingdon course, was finding picking breaking points difficult and the times were still coming down.

Yes remember the conversation, must say things ran very smoothly considering the size of the entry and the number or runs.

Yes I would have preferred to start with the Bentley course to get a feel for the car, then move on to the Abingdon course. TBH I had absolutely no idea how fast I should be going at any point on the Abingdon course (apart from the hairpin) and the grass banking alongside made me think that pushing it to the ragged edge might not be a plan.

It's a 2 litre FIAT twincam. I spoke to him in the scrutineering queue.

It drew quite a crowd. Amusing to see the interest in it when the bonnet was up, the GT3 behind being completely ignored...

Day 2 of the event, Sunday, is a Tarmac Stage Rally, so unfortunately probably the same event. Here's hoping the spectators recover.
