Hill climbing? Or what other forms of cheap motorsport?
Discussion
Sorry for the slight delay. This all sounds very exciting and we're really eager to get going now. When does the 2010 season start out of interest? We've got to make a few more purchases for the car, and I guess a plumbed in fire extinguisher would be a good idea too?
Looks like we'll have a bash at a Sprint taster day soon, followed by the real deal. Just out of interest is it possible to get competition car insurance for events such as this?
Thank you for clarifying the medical, that's useful to know and should be fine. Does anyone else sprint a Mk1 or Mk2 Escort on here?

A fire extinguisher isn't mandatory. Whether it is worthwhile is a matter of personal opinion.
The season is broadly April to October.
You can get event insurance but I would suggest it unlikely to be economic for a relatively inexpensive car.
There are some very succesful Escorts on the hills but they have had some serious cash spent on them to make them that way.
On the tyre subject. If you are in modified class everyone around you will be on hillclimb slicks. These are going to be worth seconds, as a minimum I would think about some rally slicks.
I cannot too strongly suggest you get hold of a copy of the blue book before you spend too much cash on the car and see what your competitors are up to. The best way to keep costs down is to only spend on the right things and be in the right class.
The Hillclimb & Sprint Association is a very beginner friendly club and has a championship that may include a few events nearer to you next year as well as the 'classic' hills. Worth a google.
ETA: It is bloody good fun though and I am sure you will really enjoy it. Good Luck.

Yes, but it's not cheap. (About £15 per £1000 worth of cover, with a large (>£1K) excess). If you do get cover, make sure it covers mechanicals as well as body/chassis - policies generally don't by default.I've used Competition Car Insurance and Richard Egger. There's also a poster here who works for BlueFin Group who offers competition cover, but I've never used him and don't know if he covers sprints - Jemco Andy;

Thanks for all the advice chaps. I've managed to source a MSA Blue book fortunately (but thank you for the kind offer) so I best get my head in to that and do my research. I'll find out the rules and regulations, and then get on to an event soon and chat to a few faces. Do make homework…
I will no doubt be back on to ask plenty more questions, so thank you in advance.
