A question for the gentlemen of the U ...

Mirrors for the GTR. Do they work properly at UK speeds, or do they vibrate? Is the visibility over and around the rear wing acceptable; for exammple on a busy motorway.

Having seen the rather appealing idea of Can Am mirrors on a GTR, is it more practical?

Also, regarding double din AV. Are the poitioning tolerances in the passanger side very tight. I am thinking of getting a nav unit with possibly a second smaller monitor on the front roll bar to act as a rear view mirror (with suitable camera).

Do you have any recommendations for aerials (internal/roof mounted)

Your thoughts on both subjects are greatly appreciated.

Hi,
We installed a head unit with a screen that slides in and out. The back was the size of a normal aftermarket car stereo and it only just fitted behind the dash. You also have to be very careful where you position it especially if your installing the additional air vents. There really isn't much room back there at all once you have everything in there. Get your self along to stoneliegh and ask to have a peak under someone's dash.

In regards to the aerial we used one that was a long flat strip that stuck to the underside of the grp. Not sure how good the reception will be on the move but it was ok in the garage.

Can't help with the mirrors as haven't driven ours yet. I'm sure there'll be someone else along soon who can help though.

GTR mirrors point straight at the wing. I have fitted the small 'overtaking' mirrors to the underside of the existing ones which work fine.

Had very poor reception with the strip aerial under the dash. Think you would be best with the 'bee sting' type on the roof. Having said that you will hardly be able to hear music whilst driving above the road and wind noise.

Think your probably right Steve about the strip aerial. The main use of the unit is a sat nav and reversing camera. I was kinda hoping the only noise that will be required is that of the ls7 behind our heads!! Mmmmmm

Stereo is only useful when stationary. These cars are semi race cars and you never see a radio in a race car do you!

I have gone the iPod route for sat-nav, camera and music/video. Easily removable (and can be used for other things obviously) and can be linked wirelessly to rear view camera and OBD2 (though this may not be too valuable).

To answer your questions in turn:

Yes, mirrors work fine in standard GTR posiition, or can-am style, even at speeed. I have can-am style on my GTR, lowered 80mm since IVA. See pic. What you need to be concerned with is the field of view for IVA. Can am style mirrors on a GTR work fine for IVA at standard height and arguably give a better field of view as they are slightly further out. They also are not impacted by the wing position, being a bit lower that standard GTR mirrors. When I went to IVA, I don't beleive anyone had fitted Can-am mirrors on a GTR before, so I left them standard height, only lowering them subsequently for purely aesthetic reasons. Overall visibility is fine, with you also being able to see directly behind the car.

Double din AV - I did this and space is tight and - as previous comment, you need to work out your vent pipe routes, but I managed to get effectively a flush fit after a few mods to the Din surround and fiddling about. I mainly went for my unit for sat nav capability and camera input (camera useful when reversing. I personally wouldn't bother with 2nd monitor screens - you'll find you use your mirrors to scan traffic behind, not the camera screen.

Regarding aeriels, I went for a flexi rubber 10 inch aeriel, mounted off the bracket in the lower front of the right hand side pod, where Ultima traditionally bolted the brake servo (if I remember correctly). Radio signal is fine (for FM) - and the sound system is useable upto approx 60mph, and certainly ok when in traffic.

Thank you all for your long and detailed replies. Your advice is much appreciated. It's reassuring to know that what I want, though fiddly is possible.

7litrebig, I saw your car at the recent MB SS. I very much liked the look of your mirrors and if definitely appeals to me. I think that you are spot on in regard to them looking better shortened.

Thanks again,

have you thought of fitting the standard mirrors in a lower position on the doors??

No, and I didn't realise that you could.

I am sorely tempted to come to Stonleigh and take some photos. I think it would probably settle the myriad of questions that I have got.
