s6 audi 4.2 v8 in my Ultima gtr. which gear box can fit in
Discussion
hi mates
So i am back and got my self an audi v8 engine and ready to begin.
but recently i look at a UK site http://leeds.craigslist.co.uk/
and found so many amazing engines for sale and would also want to buy since it is rather inexpensive prices compared to denmark. but i had no luck getting in contact with the sellers. so my question:
i will
1) are these adverted engines and parts real?
2) did any of you buy from these listed ads.
3) would it be safe to buy an engine from the craigslist?
anyhow in regards of the the audi v8 in the ultima i will add some photos of the development and progres next month.
best regards
alex

Hi Alex, All,
Since a couple years ago I own a 400 BHP S4 powered Ultima Sports built by Steve Smith, I'll give you my reasoning for going this unusual way as well as my ownership impressions in case that helps.
The Chevy route didn't suit my particular needs. I was looking for around 350 BHP for many reasons including low running costs, high reliability, little servicing and good cooling efficiency, and I wanted that power in the form of a normally aspirated engine not far from 90-100 BHP per litre. In other words, I didn't want massive torque for the power (as provided by the more affordable 7.5 litre Chevys giving 300-400 BHP) but rather some high-ish revs and having fun shifting gears in order to keep the engine where the juice is. As for the power figure, from past experience I thought 350 BHP per ton would be good enough fun for me.
So, has it worked? Well, I can say it really has, I've got what for me is a perfect balance of power, torque and weight, in a very reliable package which requires very little servicing (I prefer electronic ignition and EFI than their old school counterparts). Oh, and the car will happily stay at 90 ºC in a traffic jam in August no problem (in Madrid!!).
As far as I was told, my transaxle comes from a Passat TDI since, from the straighforward plug and play choices available, that's the one that can take the highest torque. I find it very slow compared to other road gearboxes, it really likes taking its time, but other than that it works perfectly well and, if I break it say in a track day, well, the cost for replacing it is no big deal at all.
Now that I now how much of a beast the car is in terms of handling and sensations, I'd say 500 BHP would suit me better, so I'm glad that I got 400 instead of 350 or below in the first place (also the car weighs around 900 kg). This car is significantly bigger than my previous ones, and higher BHP per ton than on those previous cars would be fine. That said, this power figure would imply deep changes on the whole thing since the gearbox is not oversized at all as it is.
So if I was to purchase an Ultima again, I would go for the very same one I already have. As for the Ultima as such, I now rather have a smaller car, as the Ultima is a little to wide for the use I'm giving it at present (country roads and track days at the more affordable, smaller tracks). That said, I can only praise its dynamic behaviour, its handling is not only very predictable and forgiving, but plain outstanding. The car is now up for sale since I've been unemployed for quite a while now, but that's a different story altogether.
Overall, I think it's my best purchase so far in terms of matching what I thought I wanted with what, after having owned it, I found out I actually wanted.
I hope that helps you have a think about the sort of powertrain you'd rather have and why, based on the kind of owner you are (a DIY guy or not?), intended use, driving skills (Ultimas are SO capable!), budget, personal preference and so and so on.

i am making glass in the rear sides of the hood to make the car more graphicly horizontal and visualy low. i never did like heckspoilers on a car but car just looks awesome.
where did you get this kit rear kit and mirrors?
best reg.
It's an Ultima Sports, or at least it looks like one. You can probably still order the body from the factory.i am making glass in the rear sides of the hood to make the car more graphicly horizontal and visualy low. i never did like heckspoilers on a car but car just looks awesome.

Yes, it's a Sports, that's the predecessor to the GTR. Their dimensions are probably identical, but I doubt they would make one for you, and then the catches are totally different anyway which is a problem (otherwise I'd be very happy to swap with you!).As for the mirrors, I've been trying to find the reference for you but no joy. They came from one of the usual sources like Car Builder Solutions or similar. They are available in black plastic or carbon fiber.

Hi everyone
sorry for the long absent. during the time i have build and build on my ultima with the audi engine and gearbox all works well: almost i have some small issues regarding my reverse gear on the 01E box and i have issues connecting the tachometer and ultima speedometer too the audi speedo:sender how i do get the ultima speedometer to work on a audi sender? secondly how do i get the tachometer working since i do not know where or what to connect it to. i was told at audi that their cock pit readings is in 5 volt so it will not work with the 12volts ultima clocks. have anyone an idea to solve this or any alternativ.
best reg,
alex
