Ok, so the starter motor has to come in from the rear which complicates things but mine just packed in, and always seemed to struggle since I bought the car.

I took it off and It appears to be from an old Corrado V6 or possibly a Sharan!

It is a Bosch 2339 303 222-722

Do all ultima owners with LS3's use these or is there (preferably a higher torque) another option? I'm not sure I can get a new version of what came off.

Fingers crossed!

Cheers

Or could anyone suggest a good starter motor on which it could be possible to reverse the direction?

I think all this depends on your gearbox / flywheel.

the one you mention is a short nose starter I would talk to George Shackleton at Powerlite.

send them a photo from side and front and they will do the rest.

http://www.powerlite-units.com/

find out the model number from them and let me know, I have a brand new one on the shelf, if it's the correct model you can have it for 50% wink

Cheers,

It may have been modified, but is not short nosed!!

It is currently with a local motor factors but I don't think they will have any luck.

Here is a photo I took to send them, it may help.

It seems this motor has lots of variants most of them 20 yrs ago VAG cars.

If the one you have could be used to fix/rebuild mine, you are on! Either way thanks for the offer.

The Factory may be able to supply exactly what you need.

OK I recognise that it is a long nosed starter same as mine, count the number of teeth, I think there are two different cog sizes.
let the factory know what you have and the number of teeth.
They should have one to send out to you service exchange £'s x for unit £'s y for deposit, you send yours back after fitting the new one and they refund your deposit.

note: there is a sintered bush in the housing that you removed the motor from, it supports the last 15mm or so of the long nose shaft, make sure you get the old one out or at least that the old one has disintegrated and is not still in the hole.
The new motor will come with a new bush so you will know what to look for.

That is great news!
I have sent Andy at Ultima some photos.
Thanks for the heads up about the bush.

Ok well the latest is that it is not the one everyone says it is.

If you can see the cogs wider than the shaft?

Any help welcomed.

This is the only proof I have that it exists!!

Would anyone know if the other type fits?

Have you tried the likes of Brise or WOSP for a high torque version?

I would prefer to get a Wosp variant, but what do I ask for?

I really need to confirm which type it is first, and as it comes in from the rear it has to the opposite spin to normal LS3 starters.

Show the picture to Andy at Ultima.

It is also worth thinking differently. It is not an LS3 starter, but a Porsche/Getrag starter motor.
Am I right in thinking there is a hole in the box or adaptor plate that the end of the shaft sits in to support it?

This fact may help decide what starter it is.

Yes, that's why I said to count the teeth on the cog, the most popular long nose type 1 the teeth are cut into the shaft,

It looks like you have a the one with more teeth, type 2 I think.

it's probably worth talking to "unit exchange" in Borehamwood nr Watford.

If they don't have an exchange unit they can probably re-build yours for you and they are as cheap as chips!

I had a Delco alternator that no one could help me with, they re-built my unit and sorted it in a day.
