Hopefully someone can enlighten me regarding what the part is shown below. My car has an AS SBC with MSD ignition - a Digital 6AL module and a Blaster coil. From the coil there is a connection to the MSD distributor. The wire has a spark plug type connector to the coil but there is an intermediate part on my car shown in the photo below which seems to have some electronic part inside it as well as a conductor wire. What is it, why is it fitted and can I connect directly to the coil as this part is damaged?
Thanks for your help guys.

I think this is a part left behind on the car by the AA when trying to figure out if there was a voltage from the coil to the distributor.....

Hi BobE yes exactly that,
it is a device used by a mechanic to put on the end of a lead to test for a spark I would say if you have had an AA man attend your vehicle recently he has forgotten to take it.
And yes you can detach it and put the lead directly onto your coil (a handy little tool for the future)

Thanks - that was my conclusion. The car had to be recovered last night as it died and it would seem the MSD main module has failed so I’ve now got one on order along with a new coil as a contingency. Hopefully MSD don’t have the reputation that used to follow Lucas....

When I bought my engine from Real Steal about 19 years ago, it came fitted with a Mallory distributor and ballasted coil, this is because the engine was fitted with Holley Projection which was not compatible with the original HEI distributor. I never fitted a 6AL ignition module because of concerns over reliability. A number of years ago the Projection started to “play up” so I reverted back to a carburettor. Recently I decided to fit an HEI distributor as was originally fitted to my engine. What a transformation! There appears to be more power, much easier starting and she ticks over at a lower rpm. (I’m in the process of fitting FiTech efi at the moment. Even after 18 years on the road, I’m still finding things to do to the car!)
