ULTIMA EVO -Nissan GTR
Discussion
Hi.
Has anyone on here or does anybody know of anyone in the world to attempt to put the VR38dett engine and gearbox into an ultima.?
I’m looking at starting building my own car next year and been thinking about other engine options as suppose to the supercharged ls7.
I don’t like the idea of conventional H pattern gearbox on the ultima so to me a good choice of engine/gearbox is the vr38 twin turbo from Nissan. It’s a tried and very tuneable engine with almost bulletproof gearbox...
I don’t have any car building experience but somebody who knows may say this is impossible but I’ve seen these engines put into various other cars so I can’t see why it’s a problem into the ultima..
Any info greatly appreciated.
Thanks
John.

Like the sound of the engine, I would think there should be room for a V6 , but fitting and making work a front engine 4 wheel drive electronic controlled gearbox in the rear of the Ultima might be extremely difficult/impossible. The engine + PKD Porsche gearbox would be interesting but will take a huge amount of work, time and expense to sort out.

I think Autobionics have cracked the pdk box in an Ultima.Very expensive option though.
The VTR engine would not be cheap even in stock form! Then you need to mate it to a Porsche trans (gtr one won’t work!) and not sure if that has been done. Then you need to start tuning the engine, custom headers, intercooler solution (they need a lot and not much airflow in the back of an Ultima), etc.
Don’t get me wrong I would love to see one done. Go check Lichfield imports for what can be done (their 4.6 engine that makes 1000bhp makes peak torque at lower rpm than a standard engine!!!) but compared to the easier / more well trodden options it looses its appeal.

To get 1000 hp you will need to boost it to hell and when that kicks in you will find out the reason that engine configuration has 4wd!
I have never seen the point of a turbo in an Ultima. Supercharger, yes (more linear) but turbo no.
I am sure others will defend their choice but my opinion.

Stoner, maybe in old school turbo setups but that doesn’t have to be the case these days. These engines are making well over 1000bhp at low boost. See this 4.6 motor that makes 1020bhp at 1.3-1.5 bar!. Oh and you are hitting full boost just after 3k Rpm...

Now you can bring turbos in based off of throttle position as well these days. Making them much more driveable.
However this would be ‘out the box’ and would be costly (aftermarket ECU and lots of testing), but it could be done.
Notice most Lichfield cars are tuned to have a flattish torque curve. This also helps in making the cars feel more linear and more NA / supercharged like.
