Dumb Questions
Discussion
In a number of recent posts there are a selection of terms I've not come across. I thought if I just sat back and waited it would all become clear. Alas no.
So.
What is an LS1 engine?
What is an LS6 engine?
What is the definition of a 'stroker' engine?
What is the definition of a 'Crate' engine?
Cheers
Steve

an LS1 engine (345hp) is the motor found in the 97-03 Corvette, Trans Am and Camaro z28.
the LS6 engine is the motor in the new corvette Z06 (405hp), its the same as the LS1 but with some head, cam and intake work. both motors look identical from the outside.
A Crate motor is a motor you buy complete, it comes in a crate and is usually built in full, from oil pan to carb. you just drop it in, hook it up and ur all set.
A stroker motor is a motor that is increased in size, a GM small block is a 350ci motor, thats how they are all born, then they are stroked to either a 383, 396, 406, 427, or something in between, but those are the most popular.
i dont think they go over 450 or 455ci, above that is a Big block, which wont fit in an Ultima.
I am more familiar with ford motors, their small blocks start life as either a 302 or 351, newer big blocks start at 460.
I might be off on some of the info, please feel free to correct me if i am wrong.

I have been looking at different engines for a while now and the LS1 and LS6 engines are quite nice in that they are aluminum blocks and are quite a bit lighter. The L1 engine can be purchased from GM as a complete assembly meaning you get the fuel injection computer and ignition but it is pricey for the horsepower it produces. The LS6 can be purchased from GM as well but does not come with the computer but produces more HP. There are guys modifying these motors already and producing big HP in part due to the new cylinder head design this engine employs. Dont know of anyone building exhaust systems for the Ultima for them which is a huge drawback.I could be wrong about the exhaust but I am not aware of anyone making them.
There is another variant of the LS1/LS6 out there that is worth considering - it's known as the ASA Vortec 5700 and was introduced in 2000 as a control motor for NASCAR/ASCAR racing - as a result there are a whole load of people (mostly based around Rockingham) who are very familiar with this setup.
It's based on a stock LS1, with uprated valve springs and seats, uprated rod bolts, a cam change, simplified wiring harness, modified ecu and a simple single stage dry sump system and in basic form produces 430bhp - a little bit of porting work on the inlet side of the heads yields another 40bhp or so.
Didn't someone post a little while ago saying that an Australian outfit was producing headers to suit the LS1?

I got an email from Guy Beddington last night that might be of interest to those considering an LS1 installation.
All this stuff should be up on their website within the next couple of weeks....
Quoting:-
We did all the original development and design for the LS1 engine in the Ultima GTR, including the chassis changes.
We can provide a range of performance products to suit the engine in an Ultima.
They include:
Fully tuned exhaust system (with or without cats)
Carbon fibre air intake system
Engine wiring harness and reprogrammed performance GM computer
Carbon fibre valve covers
Cam shaft upgrades
Flywheel and clutch assembly
Starter motors
Cable gear shifter kit
While I am at it, we also manufacture aftermarket lightweight body panels, aluminium high volume racing radiators, racing brake options and suspension wishbones.
All this stuff should be up on their website within the next couple of weeks....
