Well, with all this power, I need to actually transmit some of it to the gearbox. My G50 came without clutch or friction plate so I'm looking for a heavy duty item to fit that'll cope with the power and torque without frying it 10 seconds flat.

Any recommendations - AP/Sachs etc.?

Take it easy with that monster motor. A friend of mine sheared the input shaft off his G50 in his race Ultima running 625hp. You may be ok with street tires. I definately wouldn't run R compounds or Slicks.

Stig,
I went with a KEP pressure plate. These are the same guys who make the adapter plate for the Chevy/G50. You might check with them, but I think that it is good for 600ft. lbs of torque.. It sure gives my leg a good workout though. You might also check with AP racing. I think the factory have fit AP racing clutches before.
Cheers!

Try these in the UK.

Mine uprated clutch has lasted approx 7,000 miles but with these prices it may be cheaper to use a cheaper clutch and change more often

Thanks Guy,

At least the Ultima is one of the least labour intensive cars for a clutch change!

Stig - I know of another owner who sheared his input shaft on a G50. He was doing about 30mph at the time poodling through a village. He too has a bit of a monster engine, a de-tuned ex Can-Am (racing, not the rag top) with about 600bhp down from 700. His problem was sourcing a new one, I forget the details but IIRC he had a turbo box and had to wait a long time to get the new parts. Turned out to be bloody expencive too. May be worth looking at an upgrade before you install the 'box.

Paul.

Stig,
You might also check with PowerHausII regarding an uprated input shaft (if your thinking of changing yours). You'd probably want to wait until your thinking of swapping out the gears though. They'll need to weld the fixed 1st gear onto the new input shaft. I believe there is a mod to strengthen some of the input shafts on the G50's. I can't remember, though, what model G50 this applies to. It didn't apply to my 87-89 G50. Cheers!

Thanks guys, I know the 'box is going to be marginal with this sort of power. I'll investigate the uprated input shaft option, but if it comes to that, I'll probably uprate to a Hewland box when funds allow.

Of cause the 4 speed turbo box in mine is good for a claimed 850Bhp.

On a more usful note my standard Porsche clutch has been fine but I only have 515lft of torque. I also know GMAN has about 520lft, I don't know what clutch he runs.

Incidently I have been told that Quaife have shown a kit to convert the Porsche box into a tiptronic for 6k! any takers?

Looking at Hewland you are talking big money to take a transaxle with over 500bhp plus you get straight cut gears. I love the ear bleeding noise of straight gears at 80 mph!!!
