We have a law here stating that foreign kitcars are not aloud. However as I am sure you have seen there are quite a few kitcars driving on our roads. So it is possible to get it into the country. I was told by someone that when you go to get it threw customs and they ask what it is to say it is car parts. I am not sure if it would be easier to get it threw if it came in more then one shipment. I believe there are currently two Ultimas in Ontario.

I can testify that you cannot legally import an Ultima into Canada. Mine was refused entry by customs and sent back to the UK. There are illegal ways to get one but I didn't want to go that way. I think there are 3 Ultimas in Canada. Except for one they are older sports models.

Do you know if its possible to import US manufactured kit cars into Canada? I know you guys must receive a few Cobras. Have you thought about building a Porsche 962 replica? There's a guy in Canada who manufactures an excellent kit with aluminum monocoque chassis. It also has a 6-speed sequential shift gearbox with Porsche motor.

On a side note, I'd heard there were ways of getting cars into Canada illegally. I know of a guy, ughm, we'll call him "Joe" who purchased a euro-spec BMW M3 in Germany, had a German tuner pull the engine, stroke it, and throw in more aggressive cams, he then had the car shipped to Canada, and then imported it into the US. Another guy, we'll call him "Bob", purchased the euro-spec from "Joe" and used it for a while before selling it to purchase an Ultima kit. I'm not sure how "Joe" got the car into Canada, but I know "Bob" sure was happy with the find
I don't condone such activities, but I thought it was an interesting story.
Cheers!

Do you have a link for the 962 built in Canada?

Sure. This guy's had a lot of experience repairing and working on actual 962's. I think this is how he's been able to produce such an accurate replica. http://www3.telus.net/962/

That is a serious car. I have always been a big fan of the 962. I would love to build one but the effort involved would be way beyond an Ultima. Maybe when I finish my current design/build project I will look into it. I think it would probably also take some serious work to make it road legal. I am not too sure how big the cockpit is on one of those cars.

As for importing kit cars from the US, that is also illegal except for cars built before a certain date (around 1970 I think). I think people use this loophole to import Corba's.

Did you finally find something to build? Canadian manufactured kits are o.k.? What if I could put you in touch with someone who could supply you with another very...very...good car at a reasonable price? Let me check on something, and I'll get back to you via email.
Cheers!

Paul and JC,
I've emailed you both contact information of someone who can supply you with an exceptional kit. Definitely, without question, as good as an Ultima. This car will be manufactured in Canada. I'm considering the sale of my car to purchase a kit from him. He can even supply you with a 4130 cromolly steel frame chassis if you desire.
Cheers!

Bigmack,

what type of car is it? Is it a replica or an original like an Ultima? Do they have a Website? If so, may I have the address to their Website? Here's my email address, xsinner@yahoo.com. Thanks.

Errr... hate to spoil the party chaps, but last time I checked this is an Ultima forum, not a Porsche replica forum.

I'm sure Ted & Co. would be dead chuffed to see you extolling the virtues of a competitor and having looked at the site, I struggle to believe that there's anywhere near the resource behind the Porker replica as there is behind the Ultima. The guy is doing in as a hobby after all!! I'd expect the costs to spiral way above that of the Ultima too.

As for the LT replica, well beauty is in the eye of the beholder but that's hideous

There's a lot more to building these cars (especially for road use) than just copying a racecar.

Might I suggest that you give the factory a call to discuss the options before you dismiss the Ultima as an option.

Cheers

I agree that I would rather have an Ultima it would be much easier to live with. I still may end up getting one but when you have to bring one in threw back chanels you start to wonder if there is anything else compareable that I could get easier. The Porsche replica is not cheap. To outlay the money for an Ultima and then to be forced by customs to send it back to the factory is not an easy thing to take.

I must say, I'm rather impressed by the descrption of the data logging features that they're building into it. That sort of stuff would cost thousands if you went to somebody like Pi Research. Mind you, it might cost thousands on the L6B too

Indeedy. There's nothing wrong with asking for advice from others who might have some experience of trying to bring one in to Canada, but I think that these other avenues are a recipe for disaster.

I know I'm biased, but it's not without good reason

Time and time again, issues get thrashed about (often with misleading conclusions) when often a quick call to the factory will give you an answer.

They're always happy to oblige - after all it's in their best interest isn't it!!

If they can in any way get you a legitimate Ultima to Canada you can be damn sure that they will!!!

Sorry - comments like that one could result in litigation against you and I'm sure you wouldn't want that.
