I have my heart set on a Can-Am as I want a soft top. I however do not know what sort of performance difference there would be between a GTR and a Can-Am. I know the Can-Am is lighter, but the GTR is supposed to be stiffer and better aerodynamics I assume from looking at them. Anyone have any comments that could shed some light?
I'd say that either have more than enough performance for us mere mortals and the differences between the two are more profoundly effected by the mechanicals than the dynamics.
I'd go with the one you've set your heart on. If we had anything remotely resembling decent weather here in the UK I'd have been more tempted by the Can-Am myself. That said, personally I prefer the GTR shape as I find the Can-Am rear deck a little low for my taste.
You can't lose either way!

You know, I've just been speaking to a Nismologist with a fettish for ludicrous implants in his insanely capable 2.6 iron lump and he has driven a GTR recently at the Ultima factory.
McLarens and Paganis aside, he reckons the Ultima to be the most extreme - vaguely affordable - road based thriller you can subject yo' ass to.
And you know something? I think I like the look - in black, please.
From what I understand, the combination of Porsche box, 'relative' tractability () and grip(???), combined with lightning reflex steering make it, well, the ultimate!
What do you guys reckon? For say £50-60k, an Ultima GTR, early Diablo or F355 (obviously for tactility over pure adrenelin rush)?
God - just looked again! From above and behind, in BLACK...
I need tablets, doc...

I sort of have the same issues - although I'm still 6 months off starting down the track. The thing is that if you look at the days when you really really want to go for a blast (as opposed to just really want to ) then they are all nice, dry and perhaps vaguely sunny days.
For the first time my daily drive is a hard top and I hate it (cr@p steering and suspension as well as roof all contribute though). I tend to work an average of a ten hour day, including a reasonable amount of business driving - the only chance I get to catch some rays is in the car!!!
I'm therefore after a Can-Am with a windscreen and roof (unless I get any really bad feedback about the roof). That way you get to enjoy the open air, but can still drive it to Le Mans as long as you're a bit careful where it is parked. Provided I switch back to the small model girlfriend, may also be able to get a suit carrier behind the passenger seat . As for racing - this is going to cost more than a years gross basic salary - think I'm going bloody racing in it?????

You know daydreamer I used to think the same way as you. Why would I drive my nice car on the track? Well if you truly intend to push the car the safest place is on the track. You don't have to be driving in packs of cars either. There are alot of lapping events that you can go to where it is relatively safe to go fast. Well its the safest place your going to find. Here in North America we also have Solo 1 events where very little passing is involved and all drivers compete against each other threw time. Similar to getting pole position. This is generally a very friendly environment and if you want driving advice just ask and most people are more then happy.
Good go no - this car will do a considerable amount of its miles on the track - like you said - the safest place to go quick .
Big difference in racing though - track days - safest place for your car to be in three figure mph's, racing - pretty good chance of a bump. Can't have the roll cage in a Can-Am as mentioned earlier - so what for my purposes, thats all I was trying to get at.
I agree whole heartedly JC - what is the point of having a completely bonkers car if you don't intend having fun in it .
Edited to say not trying to be too defensive am I???

I have a Can-am and have received the first production roof, whilst I have had the roof fitted for months I didn't get the side screens until last weekend.
I must say its excellent and I am very pleased with it.
Only drawback of the roof on the Can-am is that it isn't exactly glamouous getting in! but without the roof the Can-am is easier to get in than the GTR so its horses for courses!
On performance stakes I have put my car on acurate scales back to back with GTRCLIVE's GTR and whilst I have the additional weight of a stereo, full screen, roof and sound deadening my car was still 100kgs lighter!
He does have the full cage and air con so it gives you a guide, remember, to get the same power to weight a GTR needs 10% more power than a Can-am fully kitted up!
Whilst I know my car can't be raced as it doesn't have an official cage I don't think it'll give any hadling advantage as the Can-am isn't exactly weak!
Pick your car on looks first as the performance of either is so extreme, you don't lose either way.

One other point.
I am told that the wind tunnel testing proved that the old spyder had better airodynamics than the sport!
Not sure how the Can-am with the full screen would fair as I don't think it been in the Tunnel with the full screen, however I have had it up to 170mph with the full screen but without the roof and it certainly wasn't giving out any funny vibes.
I suspect the GTR and Can-am with roof will be much the same.

It was too easy.
One second I was at 80mph next second I was showing a Bike what a real car could do, both mash the throttle, the Ultima walks away as if the bike is brakeing, look at the speedo.....Oh my god.
The car was rock steady and wanted more (only at about 5500rpm) but the speed gave me a shock.

Andy I seem to remember also having a full tool kit, overnight bags for me and the Wife, video camera with spare batties etc, and the difference was only 50 Kgs between us. And before you say you had more fuel I dont think It would amount to that much.
Anyway no Contest realy GTR Rules------

I don't actually think there is much between the two cars when it comes to performance.
More will bepend on the spec of the car and how well the components go together.
There is no firm facts about the Can-am with full screen in regard to airodynamics but I have absolutelly no doubt that mine will crack 200mph and I will give it a go on a test day.

Keep getting tempted by the Caterham Academy. Good variety of action, and not prohibitively expensive for a season (unless of course you get hooked - which would happen - and then problems may begin), especially if you can off load the car at the end - and since I don't much like 7's, wouldn't be quite as worried about the odd scrape.
I think that the time commitments wouldn't fit in with my means of financing (i.e. working my arse off) and I really want an Ultima. Track days will do me for a few years to get my adrenaline quota.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to race, but I think the attraction is that there are other cars on the track. If timed runs are all that is on offer, much better to spend the day at Bedford with all that lovely grass at the track side.
All of this IMHO of course. Who knows, one of the guys at work who races vintage motorbikes may well persuade me into one of the Monoposto series in the future - but let's learn to drive properly first eh!

Don't forget Clive, I also got the weight reading when you got in to drive it off
Settle it on the strip when your new engine arrives!
SSSSSHHHHHHH Don't say to much about the new engine, Don't want Stig Getting to Jelous. Wouldn't want to knock him off that cloud he's on
He still think's he's got the most power, Ahhh bless his little cotten sock's.
