Hi all.

I'm looking into building a GTR and my first ? is how much is a good gearbox G50? and how much power do they take (before they blow-up). I'm very lucky!!! as I live just a few miles from the factory, so I intend to pay them a visit asap, I'm looking at spending around 40-50k and hope this will produce a car more capable than my Lancer EVO5. I'v looked at buying a 355/Tuscan both great cars but seem very roppy on running costs/falling apart factor, this is a real shame as I love these cars. Well I've had my eye on this car for a few years now so I guess it's about time a made a move, cheers.

Andy - do a search from the box at the top of the page, type G50 into the top box, scroll down the next box to the Ultima section and the 'Last 6-months' in the last box ...... there is LOADS of info on the 'box front. Even some on the new Getrac 6-speeder.

To replace an Evo? The Ultima is very, very different. Try & drive one in the wet as you would an Evo and you will leave the road in a big smear. Treat it right and you will struggle to find a more focused, extreme or intimate drive.

Get Ted at the factory to take you for a test drive and have the cheque book ready, you will not leave without ordering!

Imagine your EVO5 with over 800bhp..........that's what it would need to match an Ultima with a spec in your price range.

It'll out handle the EVO as well, but only in the dry!

Won't be as easy to live with as the EVO though as it's very not quiet or easy to get in and out of, however the driving experience is in my opinion second to none (and I commute in a Boxter S!).

WARNING. If you go for a test drive with Ted you will be hooked, and there is currently no known cure.

Too right - you will always know that there is something better. Just driving back into Ted's garage and pushing the passenger footrest do hard that you can feel tarmac should do it

Paul,

That's rubbish. There's no reason why an Ultima is any more likely to leave the road in the wet than any other powerful car. If you drive an EVO like an idiot in the wet, you'll leave the road. It's just that with the Ultima you have a lot more power at your toetips, so if you plant your foot half way round a corner, you'll be likely to lose the back end.

I had a race in the Ultima, where the rain was falling so hard that I could hardly see the track. However, I was still overtaking bike engined Caterfields, and I would have challenged somebody in an EVO 5 to keep up, or stay on the track any better.

Sorry if this comes across as a rant, but it's been one of my pet hates since I first started driving powerful rear wheel drive cars. People used to tell me that TVR's were "tricky in the wet". I drove mine in all conditions of sun, rain, snow, and found it no worse than any other car. I just didn't put my foot on the gas pedal quite as hard as I would have done in a 1.6 Cortina.

In fact, James knows that 4 wheel drive and inclement weather conditions make no difference to driving safety - having barrel rolled a Subaru in fine dry weather on the way back from Le Mans
