...and there was I, all smug and looking forward to a very disgraceful next few years!

Like many, I got the totally unreasonable, impracticable, obsessive, irrational urge to build and own one of these things last year and acted on it, and thus a new GTR is on its way!

However, maybe I have been only seeing what I wanted to see, but I can't remember thrughout my early searching on the subject, more than one or two Ult owners selling their pride-and-joy at any one time!

....But now yikes it looks like (to me) that we have the whole club at it?...well..6 or 7 and thats just on this site...and that is scary!

and....oh...no....Even you Stig - appear to be selling your heart and soul...again?????? (If you get your way, does that mean you are leaving this forum? )

...so, for one who thought 'owning a dog...sorry and ult..is for life!', it is worrying that maybe there is something you are not telling us builders-yet-to-run merchants?????????

confused

Oh btw - I changed my login from Brdee to my new numberplate cos I am old, pretentiously posh, and of course I am losing it!

Hi Keith.

There's usually that sort of number for sale on here, but panic not, there's a hell of a lot more cars out there that owners are using and enjoying.

As I've said before, I'm only selling for practical reasons. Whilst an Ult may not be for life - a child certainly is and with a 15month old to cart around now, I'm just not getting to use it enough to do it justice.

The daft thing is, that it's probably one of the most practical (read driver friendly) cars out there!

PS. Edited to say that, no doubt much to the disappointment of some contributors, I won't be leaving the forum in the forseeable future, nor will I stop supporting the marque with the websites etc

I'm probably in no position to really comment as I'm not fortunate enough to be able to build an Ultima or any other car. But I'm guessing a large part of the enjoyment is actually the build itself, when that is complete I imagine it must leave a bit of a hole. Or am I totally wrong here in which casepaperbag

Approaching 5 years for me- half the fun is making the car better and learning how to get close to using the cars performance

For every car that is up for sale, there must be at least two being built. And of course the existing ones that get sold will have new fanatical owners. The faces may change but I don't think the Ultima is a dying breed. If the 'green' brigade had their way we'd be outlawed by now - I think most owners see the Ultima as a chance to own a proper performance car and as long as that desire is present (and the green party don't get their way!) the car should enjoy continued strong support.driving

For me building my Ult has been a project that has consumed incredible time, money and "wife points".

I haven't gone the easy way with my build thats for sure. Now when the car is ready I feel that I'm so tired of the car so it actually takes the fun out of driving it. I actually have to pull myself in the ear to find streangth enough to take it for a run. Next week I have booked a weekend at a track and hopefully that will put the smile back on my face.

I'm sure my "baby blues" will be over after a long Swedish winter and I'm looking forward to next summer and a lot of driving and a minimum of garage time.

No I will NOT sell my car. We shall grow old together

Thanks for the posts.....I was getting a tad paranoid!

As a matter of fact does anyone know how many Ults are actually either in build mode or on the road in the UK, and overseas? It would be most interesting!

Chris, that means you are evolving in your taste then? does that mean you are in line for that Lada 4x4 or Ovlov estate then? tank ....changing you name to Kevin? (sorry to all Kevins out there - telly ad reference! - no offence meant!)

Stands to reason, as the Marque gains notoriety and popularity, more get built and exist and therefore the percentage available on the pre owned market probably remains the same although the physical amount of cars available seems to have risen as a result. As regards 'what now?' once the project has been completed, that is very much up to the individual concerned IMO. I am of a similar attitude to Bluesatin in as much as I see the Ultima as a starting point for a project in progress and intend to improve, alter and modify all the time that it is in my ownership. I like to think that I will never get rid of the car but who knows?, never say never and all that. As regulars here will know, my build has taken an eon but as a direct result, I can't say that I have really noticed the financial drain as such and because of that, I have really written the cost laid out on the car of so to speak and this helps me to see it for what it is and not for what is worth.

Maybe he means the dealers around at the moment selling off bits of damaged cars.

The only people to make money from these cars it would seem are the factory, and why not, it is what they are there for after all (as far as they are concerned in any case). Some may have sought to gain in the early days when cars were a bit thin on the ground but I do not personally know of one builder to have turned a profit from such a venture, I dare say there are some out there, but not many!. I think that more often than not, if potential builders knew exactly how much money they were ACTUALLY going to invest to have a working end product, it may deter them. I don't think the time invested is such a concern because after all, for most this is primarily a hobby.

Hi Keith

From one V8 plate V8 VUM to another V8 YES I have no intensions of ever selling my car. Like Wayne I hope to continue to develop the car over many years. I have lots of future plans for the car and it's not yet back on the road from the current project. The reason I will not sell is that I have owned many fast cars over the years but none give me the adrenalin rush and childlike excitement to drive it. It draws a crowd like nothing else. Last summer I think I had every kid in the village chasing me to the Tee junction and wanting me to "give it loads". Well it was rude not to!

What kind of car would I move on to from an Ultima! I can't think of one.

i also have a theme plate: V8 GTW no less and LuckyP has X8 GTR, in many respects a theme or some kind of private plate is a must on something so exclusive, but at the same time not essential as the marque is a strong enough statement in itself.

Bloody true. Towards the end of the build, when the £60k mark was looming, I thought - jeez, I could get a pretty good Porsche or stretch to a Gallardo or 360. Or perhaps go undercover and get a RS4 or somink or nuffink. But then I thought, hold on, where is the sense of achievement in that?? All you builders out there, pat yourselves on the back, you have built fine examples of a fine vehicle and when finished you reap the rewards:

Performance
Exclusivity
Unique looks (I will never say it is beautifull)
Low cost maintanance (read tinkerability)

And something to take pictures of for your grandnippers to say:

'Hey look LuckyP Jnr II, Grand pops was cool and hip once upon a time too!'

Hmmmm......I'll go pack my tool kit.......... paperbag

I looked long and hard for a replacement and nearly 3 years after selling my canam I still don't think there is a competitor in the market.
This is why I decided to build my own design from scratch but I'd not recomend this route as it it around 10x the work.

The only reason I sold my car was money, I simply couldn't aford to have this car in the garage and build a new project.
Otherwise I'd still own it and use it regularly.
