Ok guys, the rims are laquered, and the centres are pollished alloy. My centres are just starting to show very minor pitting, and as they're off the car, it would be nice to get them back as new again. As expected the rims are still perfect. I have tried the following:

Autosol
Autosol with wire wool.
1200 grit wet n' dry with Autosol !
'T' Cut.

On the two sections that I experimented with, there was no signs of scratching after I polished it, they just look much better, but the pitting is still there (I am a bit of a perfectionist).

So this leads me to believe I am going to have to get them spun up on a lathe and 'dressed' up a bit. If I do this then it looks like I will have them laquered as well as I don't want to play this game again.

Any ideas ?

Si,

Sounds like you need an ally polishing kit. It comes with a couple of grades of buffing resin to bring back thast showroom shine.

Tweeks do it if you're in a hurry as well as people like Frosts.

I have a set of polishes from this lot:
www.englishcustompolishing.com/eneu/index.html

Their UK operation is based in Aberdeen and the website is quite helpful with hints and tips on how best to polish various metals.

I found that the best way to get a good finish is to get an even, if rough, finish with your roughest abrasive. Thereafter when you go down in roughness the finish should stay pretty even so that when you get to the super fine stuff it looks like a mirror....or so the theory goes I also found by trial and error that you absolutely have to find the grain of aluminium sheet and to polish it like you would polish wood (Doh!). The same also seems to apply to machined parts in that you have to go with the direction it was machined/turned in. Apologies if this is teaching granny how to suck eggs....

You'd probably have to remove the wax layer with thinners before painting with lacquer though?

I bought my polishing kit from 'Machine Mart'.
You have to work hard at getting the polish off before spraying.

Cheers guys - looks like a visit to Machine Mart in Twickenham on Monday... I might even treat myself to a new drill just for pollishing as well.
