A question of stalks
Discussion
Update:
STALKS
Received the stalks.
Found the wiring diagrams here: http://pdftown.com/PDF-Ford-Escort-MK3-and-MK4-Ser... this has a diagram of the circuit on page 23/28 of the "Electrical System.pdf"... and drawings of the relays and switches on page 16&17 and a key to the diagram on page 18.
You can see that the switching of the lights is with additional relays as noted elsewhere.
I'm currently drawing this up to show how it connects into the Ultima Wiring Diagram (in the stickies) and will post the drawing next week.
There's one relay in the circuit with a diode in it (#26). There's some info as to why here - http://www.bcae1.com/relays.htm - 1/2 way down under "Quenching Diodes"
HEAD UNIT
Did some internet trawling last night and found a few solutions.
Getting rid of the head unit from my dash and going to mount one of these. This will solve the space problem between the AC ducts and the head unit.
GPS + MP3/4 with HDD - like this one... still looking at options.. but I'm on the right track.
7" TS, 400MHz CPU, 64MB RAM (128MB RAM optional), 1GB SD card with preloaded maps, traffic capable, MP3 and video playback, picture viewer, MW CE .NET 5.0, 2 video inputs, USB card reader.

That will be very helpful for current builders - thanks very much,I'm currently drawing this up to show how it connects into the Ultima Wiring Diagram (in the stickies) and will post the drawing next week.
One question - when you buy these brand new - do they come with connectors, or do you have to solder directly onto the pins - or maybe you did it another way Grant ? Perhaps you can let us know.
Thanks,
Regards
Kelvin

if you get the orion wiper switch it does not have the rear wash.Had the same info sent to me a few days back by Steve (Captain Slog) and have ordered a set.

Im going to use the rear wash (push stalk forward) for front wash.
The front wash (push end of stalk in) will be horn.
I have modified the hazard switch and made a bracket to bring the arms very close to the steering column, I have a 12.5" wheel and they dont stick out beyond that....
Will get some photos over the weekend.
I went crazy on Summit last night and bought a complete new set of gauges.... stay tuned...
Recently split with my girlfriend so I have all of my Ultima time back and things are moving ahead again at a rapid pace...

OK.... here we go again.
I started out with the Escort Wiring diagram.
I messed around with it on the weekend and couldn't work out what relay 25 and 26 did....You'll see that the right hand headlight on the Escort (top light) is grounded through relay #26 (87a is grounded and 30 is normally closed), and some of the relays are negative switched
I drew it in CAD and tried all the different switching combinations and it worked for all but one switching position. I gave up at 2am this morning but couldnt get it out of my head... had nightmares about it last night ... and woke up with the answer this morning.
Ive reconfigured, got rid of 25 and 26, and made all switching +ive and very simple. Ive now been looking at this far too long to see any mistakes in it... can you guys have a look over it and tell me if there's anything amiss..
OFF
Side on + everything else off = OK
Side on + Head on + everything else off = OK
Highbeam flash with lights off = OK
Highbeam flash with side lights on = OK
Highbeam flash with head lights on = OK
Highbeam on with lights off = no High Beam = OK

I feel your pain Grant!
I took me a good while to graft them into the Ultima loom - not helped, because the original set I had, whilst also taken from an Orion and looked to all intents and purposes identical to the 'new' second set - had completely different wiring!
As you've noted, some functions are -ve switched and some +ve. I used the original wipe speed, but added an intermittent function with a timer kit which functioned independently of the stalks.
Still, it was worth it! Using the stalks was far more natural/comfortable than fiddling with toggle switches.

Hi ..need some advice...
Got the ford escort Mk4 stalks
Made the brackets (bilimey! that was fun - not!)
Hijacked the surround off a turbo and modded it to fit.
...but what about the connector blocks and relay?
I am not terrific at wiring so any help on where I could get the blocks (maybe with tails still intact to give me a clue!), and what relay to use/plug in, would be very useful!
cheers...hopefully
Keith

Keith - best bet for the blocks is a breakers. I bought a 'new' set of stalks and used a set of connectors from another set which I got from an old Orion. There are more than one type of connector too (just to make life intersting), so best to take the stalks you want to fit them to.Got the ford escort Mk4 stalks

As I said before (and as I think Crafty's finding), the wiring seems to vary and takes quite a bit of head scratching - but you'll get there in the end. In fact, I found it very useful as a learning exercise - albeit a frustrating one!
I'll try to dig out my notes for the wiring to see if that sheds some light on it?
Keith - just checked my notes and I have to say, they're just gobbledigook to me now!
If I remember rightly, I just went through the stalk function and see what pins connected to what. There's a bank of 9 (I think) on the black connector and 11 on the white one - something like that anyway. Note that some functions connect stuff across both connectors!
It's not straightforward and resulted in a lot of frustration, but a logical approach should prevail!

I can feel a quick call to Davriaman coming....maybe..
Anyhow... have to go and get down and dirty with the breakers yard first, to see if I can find those pesky block tails!
Presumably I am looking for any Mk4 escort or orion or ????, that might have the same stalks as I have?
cheers
keith
Ideally you should be looking for Mk 5/6 Escort Van as these do not have rear wash/wipe on them. I went for Mk 3 (I think) Fiesta stalks with the horn push on the end of the indicator shaft but couldn't for the life of me find any of the connectors at the breakers (different connectors to the Escort), so ended up with the Escort stalks and a remote horn.
