Another thing you must remember is the resale to a potential buyer will be a lot more attractive than the common V8.
Please don't think I am bhing the chevy (please remember I have one) I am just being honest.

Pee
Actually, I think you'll find the opposite it true. Potential buyers tend to favour the 'usual' spec. from a support perspective (community and factory before we end up down that old road again smile )

Obviously those who are more mechanically competent or who have had an SBC setup may favour the V10, but they represent a smaller segment of the potential market.

All IMHO of course smile

He happens to be right, though!

Tell you what Pee, stop using that damn BMW engine as a door stop and swap it for your SBC.
Then you can start talking as much bks as you like. Until then, you are just being a hypocrite.

Why am I a hypocrite? I said I have a chevy engine, but it is not in my car, that was your assumption. It was in there, 550 bhp dry sump all sing all dancing . I was not impressed so thought outside the box, talked to some VERY smart people and took a different direction in more ways than one!

As I said at the start of this thread I am not looking for an argument. I was just thinking that the are some people on this forum who might be able to open their minds and look at the development of the Ultima not just the maintenance!

Stig is correct... right or wrong factory spec rules when you sell your car.

We all know I hate the SBC (I like the LS's tho) but fitting a BMW, Audi etc etc will reduce its appeal to most buyers... also those wanting something other than a chevy are in the minority as it is widelly felt that a chevy is part of the cars pedigree.

I'd love to see a few Ultimas doing the rounds though with Audi V8's and BMW or Lambo V10's... would that not be awsome to see and hear a fleet of Ultimas with differing soundtracks going down the road.

It is a kit car after all!

Let me see If I had a choice between a 500bhp SBC GTR, or a 500BHP V10 BMW GTR, I think the BMW would win every time..... even if the BMW was a few grand more in price.... or is it just me ??

Alot of poeple that buy second hand Ultimas dont tend to change things (Most people), the guy I sold mine to and second owner of Andys Can-Am were not interested in tinkering the cars engine, just wanted them to be relieable and fun.... so BMW fits that bill as far as I'm conserned..... IMHO

Of interest, how much is a brand new beemer engine with all the ancilliaries and in a state of readiness to install into an ultima, you know, lower it in on a crane and bolt it all tight? I have nothing against the beemer but apples to apples would be interesting. Is the beemer easily tuned?

Ls7 is being offered in a number of hybrid guises some more ls7 then others with prices up to 14K. The plug and play variant is just that if using a GM ecu and is ready for installation. HP for that spec is up to 650 n/a US. Ls1/2/6/3 variants are much cheaper and have less capacity but still make 400-500 hp easily enough.

Here is some info on the S85, the V10 from the M5/M6 (from Wikipedia):

========================================================================

The BMW S85B50 is a DOHC 40-valve V10 automotive piston engine found on the E60 M5 and E63 M6. It was inspired by BMW's formula 1 racing division.

Technology & Performance

The S85B50 is a high-revving engine designed to utilize power from a wide rev band. Having a redline of 8250 rpm, it achieves over 100 bhp (70 kW)/litre and features a very high compression ratio of 12.0:1, beating the previous M3 of 11.5:1

* 5.0 Litre V10 engine, 507 hp (378 kW) @ 7750rpm/520 N·m (384 ft·lbf) torque @ 6100rpm

* Cast aluminum block with bed plate design split at the crankshaft axis.

* Cast aluminum heads with four valves per cylinder and CNC machined ports and combustion chambers. Valves are actuated though non-rotating inverted bucked cam followers.

* Oil cooled forged aluminum pistons from Mahle Motorsport

* Forged steel crankshaft with counterweights

* Double VANOS system which varies both intake and exhaust cam phasing

* 10 individual electronically controlled throttles

* Knock sensors have been eliminated by utilizing the "ionic current" measuring system. Using the ionic current system, engine misfires as well as knock can be measured simultaneously. Combustion quality raises or lowers cylinder pressure. The ionic current is measured by passing a low voltage across the spark plugs immediately following the ignition spark.

* Quasi-dry sump lubricating system

* The Digital Motor Electronic (DME) of the S85B50 is encrypted heavily to prevent modifications/hacking to the software.

Awards

In 2005, the first year that it was nominated, the S85B50 won four different International Engine of the Year awards in the following 4 categories:

1. International Engine of the Year, BMW 5.0 Litre V10 (M5,M6)
2. Best Performance Engine
3. Best New Engine
4. Best Above 4.0 Litre

In 2006 the S85B50 again won several International Engine of the Year awards, winning in the following 3 categories:

1. International Engine of the Year, BMW 5.0 Litre V10 (M5,M6)
2. Best Performance Engine
3. Best Above 4.0 Litre

In 2007 the S85B50 again won several International Engine of the Year awards, winning in the following 2 categories:

1. Best Performance Engine
2. Best Above 4.0 Litre

In 2008 the S85B50 again won an International Engine of the Year award, winning in the following category:

1. Best Above 4.0 Litre

Lol, you'd think the yanks would be gagging for it!

Reading the specs it does look like an impressive bit of kit. Very complex though and non tunable unless I've missed something.

They are tunable.

The twin turbo one is not working too well.

The twin sc one is however working quite well in the
GPower Hurricane - 730hp.
