well, I recognize almost all the gear in this thread from being interest in hi-fi from 1976 but some of the stuff is out of my price league so to adjust the balance -
my neighbour still has a mid-70s National Panasonic music centre*, the wide one box type that were the then modern replacements for the 'stereograms'
record deck with receiver and cassette deck all together in one unit with full width smoked plastic cover and separate speakers!
I've not got photos of my hi-fi throughout the years but it started with a Pioneer PL15 record deck (with arm return unlike the more popular PL12), Akai 30wpc amp and some biggish (50 litre perhaps) Sony speakers and a pair of square box metal tube C shape cube speaker stands, I think the whole lot cost me £300 which was three months gross (not net) wages to me
I might have a photo of some 1980s JBL horizontal 50 litre studio monitors I had partnered with a Harmon Karden 120wpc integrated amp and I think a very expensive French CD player, all housed in our small living room, it explains my slight tinnitus now

- bought I think when VAT was 25% for luxury goods, remember that, went up from 12½% or was it 17½%(?)

I've just powered up my 'new' old gear for the first time. Wow, really powerful and excellent sound quality. Only issue is the CD-63, on certain CD's some instruments may be missing or very quiet yet others all instruments are present and very detailed. Any ideas? Everything is connected correctly
Marantz CD-63 is that
either one of your ears has a partial blockage, wax, pillow ect.
or the balance control on amp
or CD player lens needs cleaning
or the actual CD needs cleaning (doubtful but hey might be, careful with cleaning procedure read up on it)
is it going through a graphic equalizer that needs adjusting (or my choice removing)
you cleaned all interconnect and equipment connections?
or it could be that's how it is
do they still use transit screws when selling CD players?

If it has a headphone socket (I can't see one in the photos) then try plugging them in directly and listening there. That will rule out the amplifier etc.
One possibility is that one/many/all of the electrolytic capacitors have dried up over time, as they tend to. This could easily filter out a range of frequencies. Easy to replace if you are reasonably handy with a soldering iron.

good call I forgot that price level would have a headphone socket but probably full size 'jack' so old 'phones' or mini-to-full jack converter, or adapter lead, required
ETA: a very careful spray of electrical contact cleaner in the right area might help (but it might not) and give a temporary or permanent 'repair'
I've sorted quite a few minor faults by a quick spray - it like a lot of car (classic) maintenance just boiling down to cleaning and lubing

ah, a bendy arm and a strobe. Lovely.I want one of these so badly but there's no way I can justify it, as my existing turntable (Bush MTT1) gives excellent results for what it is and my brother has a USB turntable for when I need to transfer to digital. But I WANT a S shaped tubular arm and a strobe. I wish the Bush would give up the ghost and give me the excuse I need.
I have a marantz CD-63, it sounds awesome, im not using it atm as it needs a new laser thing as its started skipping and cleaning it hasnt helped.
Their is a guide online somewhere on what to buy and how to do it, I will see if I can find it for you.

Note, I think the CD-63, CD-63se & the CD-63KI all have different Laser Mechanisms.

Thing is - there was also an earlier CD63, which was in the form of a top loader, using the old swing arm mechanism (now totally obsolete).
Old mechanism was CDM-4/19 (might have been CDM-0) and the later CD63 used the CDM12.1.
This is the old CD63
And this is the later CD63 (which was also came in SE and Ki editions).
Big fan of retro hifi stuff
My setup includes a Rotel RC971 / RB 971 Pre/power amp setup, Technics SH8058 graphic equaliser and a pair of Mordaunt Short MS55ti floorstanders - Also have an 80's Pioneer turntable and a 90's Sony CD player.
Got a Denon DRM550 cassette deck in the loft which was superb in its day but hasnt been used for over 10 Years now.
My Dad still has a pair of the original legendary kef 104 floorstanders that he bought new in the late 70's - they are used every day and still sound superb

Nice - I have a CD63 in the loft. Been up there for years along with my Kenwood KX580 cassette deck.
I did bring my Mission Cyrus One down from the loft a few weeks ago and it is working great - I think it's been up there for nearly 10 years!

I used to have a CD player that looked the same as that early CD63 but it was a Meridian. When it stopped working I took it apart and inside it had Sony markings on it.

Can anyone recommend a hi-fi outlet that could repair a Rega Planar 3 that needs a new belt/tone arm and cartridge in the Oxford area?
Looking for a backstreet type who really knows his stuff; the type who can recite parts numbers from '70s rather than asim dealer as the prices/advice I'm getting aren't up to much.

Deco Audio in Aylesbury are really good for record deck repairs and servicing. I had my Rega P3 looked at by them a few months ago and it came back playing better than new.

Regas tend to be pretty straightforward. Have a go yourself!
The belt is just like an elastic band, there is just one nut holding the arm on. The only fiddly but is fitting a cartridge, but they are easier than they used to be as they often have threaded bodies now.
Deco should easily be able to get you the parts.
Running an early 90s Exposure VII pre / VIII power combination myself, also got a Gyrodec and a Systemdek II in use. Old is good!
