Hi David, that driver looks interesting, but not sure I could justify spending ~£250 on a pair, just to experiment!

Back in the 80's I experimented with open baffles, but no matter what I tried, I couldn't get them to sound right - I suspect I just didn't have enough free space.

I just find it all a bit of a black art these days!
Fair point...£250 is a fair bit to spend just to have a play. That driver is something special though; I'm tempted.

Open baffles do need loads of space but that issue disappears when you use them outside. I understand what you mean about a black art; flat power response is key in my experience. That's why that Satori is so good; slightly rising HF on Axis and still very good off axis.

I've been keeping an eye on this for my amusement.

Bloke selling a branded plastic bag he got for free at a show, 3rd time listed, no one appears to want it laugh

He has stressed that it is 100% genuine and not a knock-off... guys, surely one of you must want it??

Needed a new bigger SSD drive for my PC (general use, nothing to do with Hi-Fi), was considering the Crucial MX500 1TB, and the below review convinced me i'd made the right choice:

Maybe im due a whoosh parrot, but how can one SSD make music sound different to another SSD, all other things being equal?

They cannot in any way. Peter is mentally ill.

No whoosh parrot required.

I don't see how it can have any influence on the sound.

Just in the same way some folk are claiming certain network switches (and routers!) sound better than others.

Some even say that using a different power supply for the switch /. router makes a difference....

Deluded.

  • Although for today only, I'm offering a special power supply for your router, it will speed up PH, and using my power supply, PH will never go down.
  • Honest.

I expect there "can" be issues in the path, read/write speeds, interface etc. but SSD should be blistering fast anyway, however I have external hard drives that are terrible even though claimed USB3 speeds.

For that you'll need the super deluxe HyperX power supply with audiophool audiophile upgrades.

However these are in limited supply at the moment, but please leave your email address and I'll be sure to notify you as soon as one becomes available.

It is plainly obvious. The Crucial MX500 SSDs are assembled by the delicate hands of Nepalese Virgins in the High Altitude Himalayas devoid of impurities, both atmospheric and hedonistic which is transferred via osmosis to the SSD. music stored on such devices therefore sounds like it has come from the heart of heaven itself.

Did you not know that?

Oh,I thought it was because the design of the chips and circuit board was such that the lengths of all the data buses were identical

Talking of power, I'm enjoying this very calm weather at the moment/ I find when there's a lot of wind power on the grid you get more wow and flutter

Well now that depends...

Would you like it burnt in with solar power, UPS power, hamster power or just plain old Northern Electricity grid power?

All of the above offer a 1 week burn in at 75 pence an hour.

For a small substantial extra fee I could personally take it to either a coal fired, wood burning or nuclear power station?

Personally I find that burn in with nuclear power offers the most clarity and purest internet access.

We’re talking about a data stream of up to 10Mbps if we are talking 192/24 uncompressed or more typically
<1Mbps for 44.1/16 lossless.

Trust me - if a modern drive of any form, or network device is struggling to sustain this reliably something is seriously broken - and in any case the music will simply pause rather than alter in tonal quality.

I think the clutching at straws argument is that these differences affect electromagnetic noise arriving at the deciding device.

All BS IMHO.

I know somebody who would put the network switch on an anti vibration platform and then tell you everything sounds better.

Listening To Storage

"Listening tests reveal significant sound quality differences between various digital music storage technologies."

Article By Andrew Harrison and Stephen N. Harris
There are so many wild claims here. Striped sounds better than RAID etc. etc.

This is worse than the claims that the sound can be changed by different routers and switches.

These folk are truly deluded.

Oh dear. I imagine a separate NAS running SSDs, powered via a Russ Andrews kettle lead from its own dedicated spur, would be the best-sounding storage. Until one of these snake-oil sellers comes up with a pricier rebadged NAS with gold RJ45 sockets.

SSDs are too clinical. Nothing beats the warmth of a spinning platter.
