Without getting into amp topology, dither, distortion and measurement down to 0.00000001% I’ll simply state that one of the best sounding systems I’ve heard for ‘electronic’ music (in all its guises) was a Krell CD player, Krell integrated amp driving Kef 3.2 floorstanders.

Adding a little to the cost of a ‘service’ the MF should get you a KAV 300i integrated - they pop up on eBay from time to time.

I’m not sure which SF speakers you have but lots of owners of their earlier designs reported excellent results with (granted, a bit further up the food chain) Krell pre/powers. The 300i shares a lot of the sound of the big Krell stuff without costing £tens of thousands.
Oo, I've got Krell in my Hyundai Tucson smile

Can anyone on here advise?

A mate of mine died recently and his wife has asked me to sell his high-end Hi-Fi gear for him. I'm still waiting for the speakers to be dropped off so I don't know the make or model.

What I do have is a Linn Sonder LP12 deck unboxed, Naim Uni Pivot Tonearm, A musical Fidelity P170 Amp, a Pre Amp 3B, and Cambridge Audio CD2.

I'm not trying to bypass any rules and sell on here so no discussion regarding that, please.

However, I am asking where the best place to sell this sort of kit is outside of eBay. Are there any specialist Hi-Fi selling sites in the UK? The Linn Deck is unboxed so posting that is not an option.

Advice appreciated.

Obviously, eBay, other than that, the only way I know of is via a second-hand HiFi dealer. Be prepared to for quite low prices, HiFi seems to suffer very high depreciation.

I buy from here: https://2ndhandhifi.co.uk/. It's a fantastic Aladdin's cave and if you're in Northumberland hopefully not too far away.

Nice guys and I've been buying/selling hifi from one of the owners since I was a teenager. But as you expect with a dealer of any kind, you pay for the convenience of not having to sell it yourself.

Please don’t let the Naim tone arm go for peanuts, they’re highly sought after. I’d be properly investigating what it’s worth and taking it from there.
The Linn Sondek’s value will depend on age, spec and service history, so you’ll need to look into that. It could be worth a few hundred or a fair few thousand pounds.

Looking at ebay and 'completed listings' will give you an idea of what's actually selling for how much.

I was taken aback at what I wasn't offered in px recently.

Rule of thumb...worth about 50% of what you paid new for it when you plug it in the same day!!

I think a lot of this gear sits around on dealers' shelves for a long time.
Every day it sits there, some of it is getting more obsolete.
Even if they are marking up an amp by £500, they have to shift one everyday to pay the bills,

And I bet a lot of trade-in stuff needs work, or will be sold and then returned.
Retail is hard graft IMHO.

me waffling earlier said:
In the spirit of tediousness, I've just ordered a NAD C298 power amp from Sevenoaks, at a slight discount, with the ability to return it if it doesn't work for me.

The thread appears to have saved me from the audiophile bullst of having my old amp expensively refurbished, but led me to spend even more money on a new one.

But it wasn't a NAD M33 as I already have a NAD C658 streamer that I love, and £4500 on a one box solution that looks nice and has a fancy screen seemed a little...excessive.

Hence an ugly new power amp.

I shall buy some cables made out of Shergar's mane, hand-spun by 12 year old Norfolk virgins (the very rareness of such beings with the correct number of fingers to do the work being the main appeal/cost , in order to build some thread credentials, and to sufficiently entertain TEKNOPUG.

Technically, given the nature of my speakers, I should have spent far more money on amplification, but I am beginning to suspect that this too can be audiophile bullst...
Um, I should probably start another thread on this, but the NAD C298 is scarily, scarily good. And mine isn't even really run in yet at about 6 hours of use.

A friend and I have spent the whole evening playing with it, and his McIntosh MC152, with my speakers and a very varied music selection, streamed from Tidal in high resolution.

The Mac does classical and acoustic music a bit better, and gives some instruments a woodier feel. But any music that is even vaguely electric or electronic, and the NAD absolutely walks it.

The Class D interloper just has better control, bass and clarity and is just more musical and fun to listen to. This may be because it tempers the warm nature of my speakers better than the McIntosh, but I'm a bit shocked at how different (better) my system sounds with the NAD as the core.

The McIntosh had a better soundstage. But then I programmed my preamp's DIRAC room correction, and that completely levelled the playing field.

My old Musical Fidelity amp is completely outclassed, unsurprisingly. I am glad you lot told me that an upgrade to the MF would probably be a waste of money. I think you were right. Seems like the latest Class D amps are really a new level in what you can do for your budget.

If anyone wants a new power amp, I'd audition this NAD thing. It is, sadly, ugly as sin and looks like it costs 20p, unlike the Mac, and indeed MF A3.2, which look beautiful. But the way it plays music...

I'm happy.

Interestingly, on thread topic, I was thinking about a (cheap) mains conditioner as my class AB amp buzzed to variable levels depending on what else was running in the house (amp buzzing, not speakers).

The Class D amp doesn't seem to care about the current it receives, and is completely silent.

That will be mains hum in the transformer.

This new amp will have a switched mode power supply, with excellent rejection of mains rubbish.

It will also be have a well regulated, unlike traditional linear power supplies used in nearly all HiFi until recently.
Coupled with the good PSRR, andoutput impedance of the amplifier subsystem, this delivers very well controlled and dynamic bass, which sounds like what you are experiencing.

Speaker cables ?

I have recently upgraded my audio from an aging Cambridge Audio amp and cd player to Marantz 6007 range , I do have some pretty crappy cabling from the amp to the speakers though

What cables should I look at that wont break the bank, budget perhaps £50 for 10m of cable ?

Yes.

There's a whole forum for discussion of sensible hifi upgrades. This thread is for pointing and laughing at overpriced pseudo-scientific bunkum.
