But that's a calculation for continuous operation, which is completely unrealistic unless you happen to like listening to white noise or sine waves.

I have a pair of active loudspeakers in my lounge. Each has 13 amplifier modules in with a total power output of 8200W, however they plug into a 13A socket and I have never blown any fuses or tripped any breakers when running them at levels that make my eyeballs vibrate and things upstairs rattle.

There's a very big difference between running something flat out continuously and requiring very short term bursts of high power.
Ignoring the 'anti techie' brigade for a moment;

13 amplifier modules per speaker - that doesn't add up for a stereo pair? It's either 12 or 14 (unless you've neglected to mention a sub of course).

Also - are these Class D or A/B (or G?).

Additionally, in an average room with average efficiency speakers (~90 db per M per 1 watt), it doesn't take a huge amount of watts to create a big noise.

I thought that was the point of the entire thread...isn't there an equivalent for discussing all the minute, pointless bks?

A new thread could probably be started, however the context would be lost.

A slight thread deviation now and then is harmless, if you don't like what you see, simply scroll on by...

And as the thread OP I believe I have the right to allow the occasional diversion.

So sorry; I didn't realise that starting a thread conferred admin rights. As you were...

Make, please. I'm in the process of renovating my Meridian M10 speakers, just wondering if I need 14 amplifiers in each. yikes

Lol @ the comments guys.

Perhaps you should just chill.

It may not be interesting you, but it is to me.

There are plenty of threads that go off on a tangent for a few posts and then get back on track again - it's just the nature of things.

I don't know why you're getting so upset about it.

Not everyone is happy to not understand things.

After all only through understanding can you decide if something is BS.

The trouble is, the more you know, the more you realise you don’t know.

For most of us, we just want a system that gives us pleasure. I really don’t want to pursue a series of PhDs in electronics, acoustics, human physiology etc etc just so I can declare on forums that “I’m right”.

Upset? Bored more like. I use PH for idle amusement during downtime and reading about the latest cable for £30k is indeed amusing.

What’s not amusing is people flexing their adenoids over sine waves and clipping. It’s dull and uninteresting for those who want to read the thread for some light relief.

You say scroll on, I say start another thread dedicated to the techy stuff. Takes less than a minute, off you go.

So you found the post where you committed.. just a bluff?

Reasonable to call that bluff.

Would you like me to provide the equations, so get you started?

It is an interesting British cultural trait, to go on attack when faced with things they don't understand.

The more knowledgeable become the target.

I don’t want to be overly rude but that is very condescending.

Another interesting trait is simply not taking a statement at face value. This is a car forum where most people come to relax, rather than obsess (at least outside NP&E).

For those that want to tug themselves off to pictures of oscilloscope traces, there are several ‘objectivist’ HiFi fora stuffed full of people who listen to, or simply measure, their equipment rather than to the music it generates.

If you think you’re being attacked, you’re more sensitive than than the widgets you obsess over and bore everyone else to tears about.

It’s supposed to be a fun thread. If you don’t want it to be a fun thread and want to stone it to death with your superior knowledge of electronics, you crack on. Just don’t expect us mere mortals to stick around.
