1.5M% absolutely.
Fruitier than a bowl of a frosted fruit loops, with 100s & 1000s sprinkled on top.

On a serious note, the following is very interesting and bit closer to the truth.

That no one is quite sure if that website is a piss take or an actual operating business should tell you all you need to know about the audiophiles.

I hope most 'audiophiles' realise that crap in still equals crap out, however I think most people see their HiFi as making the best of whatever recording they have, so even if it's crap to start with, they still want to make the most of it.

Cables is an area I really struggle with, I can't get my head around spending a fortune, but then again when I moved and my HiFi ended up in a much bigger room it's changed the sound more than any cable ever could.

As someone who likes quality playback, I don't really care what happens in the studio, so long as the final outcome is a recording of good quality.

Sadly, a large percentage of the time, this is not the case - and this is not down to poor quality studio equipment, but the final mastering process, where levels are pushed up way to high.

I tinker with my system, but I've never been inclined to spend vast amounts of money on cables and other so called 'enhancements'.

I just like to give the recording the best chance to sound good.

Sadly though, it truly is a case of 'garbage in, garbage out' with so much stuff today.

It is refreshing when an artist / producer will make the effort to ensure that what we hear at home is a pretty good facsimile of what was heard in the studio.

Which is precisely what audiophiles *don't* do - they want to make it "better".

Nonsense, any true "Audiophile" understands and strives for making the sound they hear, as close to having the performer(s) right there in front of them.
You can't have "better" than that, so the aim is to strip away anything which masks the very fine nuances that create the illusion.
This is why you read about soundstaging and imaging.
That's not to say some people prefer to hear a rose-tinted output, rather than an absolutely accurate representation, which will often be attributed to valve-based equipment, both modern and vintage.

This..

This argument has worried me for a long time. When we sit and listen to our hi-fi systems we are (generally) sat in the comfort of our homes... the lounge, front room, den... call it what you will.

when we listen to live music we are (generally) in a room that is much bigger in order to accommodate the musician(s) and the audience.

When we are sat at home on our own in our listening room we have the luxury of listening intently to how capable our hi-fi systems are. (or not)

When we listen to live music.... well there's a whole lot more going on.

Two entirely different scenarios, two entirely different entities. It is impossible to reproduce the sound of a live performance in your listening room.

Whats more, I have had the opportunity to listen to musicians perform together in my listening room (way-hey) and to think any hi-fi system, however magnificent, could replicate that is frankly ridiculous.

Any body who thinks that, if only they spend enough on electronics, electrics or shun mook mpingos etc will one day achieve Nirvana live in their living rooms.... are, quite frankly, delusional.

Regards.

No-one is after that anyway as a live performance is nothing like a studio recording anyway, a decent system sounds better than a regular system, spend more money then the sound quality improves, you can take this to extremes where the difference is debatable but the goal is the best possible sound, not to recreate a studio or a concert.

I think the goal should be whatever you want it to be. Its your loot after all but the claims need examining if made. Was there not someone going on about gold plated optical connectors once?

Sat here listening to streamed Planet Rock through a puny £3 3.5mm audio lead from the eMac to my amp and it sounds good enough for what I want of it.

Is Planet Rock still a 64k stream?

The last time I listened, it sounded fecking awful.

I searched (and found) and alternate stream which claimed to be 128k, but I think they were simply streaming the original 64k stream at 128k...

Rummages in iTunes.....

Not sure where to find it. Data on Mac activity monitor is 5-9 kb/sec, averaging out at the riff on Marrillion at 12Kb/Sec

Ah, found it in iTunes, stream is 96Kbps

Sounding OK here for what I want it for.
