I have tried connecting my PS4 through an Onkyo amp to an old Pioneer PDP 434 plasma but get no picture. It works with the xbox 360 so I know it is not the hdmi input or the Onkyo amp.

Is there something different with the HDMI standard that the PS4 is using that will mean that it will not work on an older TV. Would using an HDMI to component cable bypass this problem?

Any advice appreciated

Sounds odd, my 435 works fine with the ps4 via a Yamaha amp only thing I can suggest is try another hdmi cable also make sure it's all powered down when connecting up.

The PS3 doesn't work with my older pioneer amp. The screen is black, but unplugging the HDMI while everything is running sorts it out. It's the HDMI hand shake that isn't working. For pioneer amps you have to update the firmware to resolve this. New amps that's easy because of the wifi and Ethernet. Old ones have to be taken into a repair center. But, even though my amp is outside of warranty and bought second hand pioneer (US in my case) are willing to pay.

I had a similar problem. The PS4 would not work with my HDMI splitter when both the earlier consoles would. It felt like there wasn't a constant supply on whatever output tells the AV reciever, which was a sony on this occasion, that this output/input was powered up.
I now run it into a powered switch and its fine, but if the power is turned off on the 4 way switch its no go.

It's possible to add the 5v required with an adapter. I had to do this with my HDMI baluns. Otherwise there was no signal even though the balun was lot up.

Have tried getting it sorted by making sure cables are only fitted when power off on items. Have tried it running through the amp on all its HDMI inputs and directly to the TV. Have tried all combinations of order of switching on items and also different cables.

The result is the same each time. TV flickers about once per second as if it is trying to get a signal but no joy. One weird thing is that it gives the resolution information in the top right corner (info from the tv) as 1125p.
If I change the PS4 resolution setting to 720p I stead of automatic (using a different screen) then plug it back into the pioneer then the top fight corner information tells me it's a 625p resolution setting.

Will try am HDMI to component converter and use the optical out for the sound and see if this sorts the issue.

Hi Rex, I have some test generator, test monitor and I think some HDMI to component converters if you want to borrow them.

Also, are you sure the Onkyo isn't trying to upscale as well.

Hi Chris. That would be great if I could borrow a converter to test it.

I don't think it is the onkio as I get the same result I'd I take the onkyo out of the equation

I'd hope so, otherwise he's been sitting on a PS4 he can't use for four years!
