Is 4k worth it?
Discussion
Been mulling this over myself, not really prepared to pay a premium for 4k content for regular TV viewing any time soon so have decided to go with a new full HD set to replace my 6 year old Sony W5500.
Think I’ve pretty much decided on the new Panasonic TX 49DS500, which quite a few places seem to have online now for £499. Going to wait to see one in the flesh and then make use of a 20% discount I can get with an online retailer through a family member.

When it sees a black background like this it reduces total brightness by about 40% (what I would have called 'beam current' when tellys were crisp and sharp and didn't smear and lag)!.
So the bright bits fade down before your eyes when the background gets dark. And then when its a lighter background picture it ramps up the overall brightness. Nuts!
Should have swallowed the return cost and sent it back I guess- dohh! A which 'Best Buy' too 74%... Or is it me?

Its on an HDMI input from a PC Blackmagic Intensity 4k card. Its in 'standard' pic mode that gives you access to tweak (odd there isnt an 'user' mode but it was cheap)
Press source on your TV, select the input, press down, edit device type, change to dvi devices. Should be able to change the HDMI black level in standard pic mode. I can on mine anyway.Reviews here, some days ago.

I like my Samsung. But for God's sake, I wish they'd leave the smart hub alone - it seems to want to update every week.
By 'update' you mean 'remove apps', right?I went and opened the Smart Hub on my 32" 6 series in one of the bedrooms this morning and it was just a sea of empty space where now defunct apps used to be!

Heh, I guess so. Don't really notice - they haven't removed anything that I use - netflix, plex, iplayer and amazon. Yet.I went and opened the Smart Hub on my 32" 6 series in one of the bedrooms this morning and it was just a sea of empty space where now defunct apps used to be!

Your budget is too small for a decent Full HD TV, let alone a good 4k one.
Just get the best Full HD model you can afford, it will still be a pretty dire LCD panel, but that's the market now.
I don't know, I think something like the Sony KDL 50W805c is a great HD TV for a really good price. OP could do a lot worse for a smidge over £500.Just get the best Full HD model you can afford, it will still be a pretty dire LCD panel, but that's the market now.

I was digging for info on the 43" version of that Sony as it appears some people don't really get along with the android system as well as it being a bit buggy and crashing occasionally.
Nice looking in the flesh though.
It has been problematic but I think updates are coming all the time to improve it. It scores highly for deep black levels, rich colours with incredibly sharp images as well as decent input lag figures. Hard to find anything perfect right now- I'm pulling my hair out trying to decide on a new panel. So much choice and such a mass of info.Nice looking in the flesh though.

What you want is a VCD player, 23 years old and you can still get new films for it
