In praise of Richer Sounds

Been using Richer Sounds on and off for getting on for thirty years, a rare gem in the world of retail, spent many a happy visit in the Original Stockport store, met Julian Richer who was serving in there, amazed they have survived when many have gone to the wall in that realm, so he must be one hell of a businessman, but based on what I have read, one with a strong customer, employee and ethical stance. Just got my latest telly from their website, not quite the same but not fancying lumping it back with it being quite large.
I had an issue with some Wharfedale surround speakers and they sorted it without an issue, they really have a great ethos, maybe tinged with Nostalgia as used to go when was a poor student, usually same day as we wandered into Stockport to get the latest Viz, strange as just bought the telly and my best Christmas present was a Viz annual, some things never really, truly change.
Defiantly this, worth a little extra money because of the service. How they survive who knows, but while they exist I would much rather spend my money there than online or at Currys. Julian Richer has transferred 60% of his holding in the business into an employee ownership trust, following in the footsteps of retail giant The John Lewis Partnership.
The move will see him land £9.2 million for the stake, although £3.5 million will be handed straight back to staff as loyalty bonuses.
Each of its 522 employees will pick up £1,000 for every year worked at the firm, meaning an average payout of £8,000.

Its always very easy to knock those who are successful or make a bit of money but when you read something like this you think "good on them, worked hard, got the rewards and nice to see they value those who helped them".
And... discounted a new Onkyo AV amp down massively and stuck a 5 year warranty on it for me when I mentioned the reason for replacing the old one (known fault on previous model).
Aside from my latest TV everything AV comes from RS for this reason.

Heart warming stuff, always been a fan of them. Collected a new TV from my local store last night! Always happy & impressed when dealing with them.
Their board of directors is serious stuff as well, newest member has been there 25 years!!
Average length of service for their staff is 8 years.

He has always been a really nice guy, i have met him many times in varying circumstances and he is just genuinely nice.
I am not sure if they still do it, but when you first started working at Richer Sounds, you would go to his house for a 3 day training seminar and whilst you were there you had access to all the amenities....bar, cinema etc etc. Was a great introduction into the company.

Another RS fan, great guys in Cardiff store and have bought all my tv/home cinema stuff there for years and always recommend anyone who's thinking of doing the same to drop by.
I casually walked in whilst waiting for Mrs Flops to do something hair related a few weeks ago, not buying just browsing. One of the sales staff there was genuinely interested in what I'd bought previously, we got chatting and I was actually late to pick her up because of it. No sales pitch just us having a good natter about hifi and future options for my setup. That goes a long way and I won't go anywhere else, top men!

Used them on and off for the last 25 years, from audio cables and minidisc players (remember them?) to a £1200 Panasonic Plasma a few years ago. Remember taking a pair of Atacama speaker stands home on the bus when I lived in Fulham 20 years ago. Always very helpful and for once the employees know their stuff.
I thought the good think about the warranty was that if you remembered you could get a refund if you hadn't used it? So it seemed like a nobrainer at the time (but I guess most people forgot it).
Still got a couple of mugs in the cupboard!
Off to look at AVRs now...
